Shaffer, Bennett Names Second-Team All-Conference

SELINSGROVE , PA – Susquehanna University senior Sarah Shaffer and junior Bekah Bennett have been named second-team All-Commonwealth Conference in softball, as voted by the league's eight head coaches and released Thursday.

In addition, Shaffer has been named first-team Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for the second straight season, after compiling a 3.82 cumulative grade-point average as an English/secondary education major.

Shaffer (New Castle, PA/Shenango) started all 28 games at shortstop and hit .381 with two home runs and 16 runs batted in for the Crusaders, leading the team in batting average, runs scored (24) and hits (37).

She finished her career as Susquehanna's career leader in hits with 152 and home runs with eight, ranks second in runs batted in with 68 and in triples with 12 and is third in doubles with 20, to go with a .378 batting average in 121 games – all starts.

Bennett (Mifflinburg, PA/Milton) was selected as a utility player after splitting action between first base and the pitchers circle. Before missing the final 10 games of the season with a broken finger, she batted .263 with a home run and seven runs batted in at the plate while compiling a 5-2 record with a team-best 2.12 earned run average in seven starts.

In 43 innings pitched, Bennett allowed just 27 hits and struck out 21 batters while throwing three complete games and one shutout.

The Crusaders finished 16-12 overall and 5-9 in the Commonwealth Conference under fifth-year head coach Kathy Kroupa.
