Kern Named Second-Team Academic All-District

Crusader Women's Hoops Star Recognized for Academic, Athletic Success

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Susquehanna senior center Karyn Kern has been named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District II College Division Women's Basketball second team, announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).

Kern (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley H.S.), who graduated from Susquehanna in May, 2000 with a bachelor's degree in psychology, is pursuing a second degree in corporate communications with a business minor and has a 3.54 cumulative grade-point average.

A six-time member of the Dean's List at Susquehanna, she has been inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership and Psi Chi psychology honor societies. In addition, she was a four-year Presidential Scholarship recipient and has served as a student assistant in the sports information office at Susquehanna for the past two years.

On the court, Kern finished her Susquehanna career as the third-leading scorer in school history with 1,773 points and the leading rebounder with 1,079 boards in 106 games. She also finished her career as the Middle Atlantic Conference career leader in field-goal percentage at 59.7 percent and ranked second in rebounding with 10.2 rebounds per game.

Granted a fifth year of eligibility following a knee injury five games into last season, Kern tied for the Commonwealth Conference lead in scoring (16.8 points per game) and blocked shots (1.50 blocks per game) this year while leading the league in rebounding at 11.0 per contest. She posted 14 double-doubles during the 2000-01 season and 56 in her career.

Against Moravian on January 30, Kern broke the school record for career rebounds with her 997th board in the first half, and became the first Crusader women's player to surpass 1,000 career boards late in the game.

Her career high in points was 37 set against Rochester on November 27, 1999, while her personal best in rebounds was 22 against Lebanon Valley on December 5, 1996. Kern averaged at least 15 points per game in all four full seasons and connected on 72.5 percent of her free-throw attempts in her career.

Away from basketball, Kern is a four-time Middle Atlantic Conference outdoor track and field champion - winning the triple jump three times and the long jump once - and was named Susquehanna's Outstanding Senior Women's Scholar-Athlete in 2000.

The District II College Division consists of all non-NCAA Division I colleges and universities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve.

Kern is the daughter of Peter and Carol Kern of Brodheadsville.
