SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Even with two games left in the 2000-2001 basketball season, both the Susquehanna University men’s and women’s basketball teams have their postseason plans firmly in focus.
While the women’s squad is assured of a Commonwealth Conference semifinal matchup with Elizabethtown College on February 21, the men’s team will sit out the playoffs for a third consecutive season after dropping six straight league games to tumble into last place in the eight-team conference.
Both teams will hit the hardwood twice in the regular season’s final week, as the Crusaders will head to Huntingdon to battle Juniata on Wednesday night in a doubleheader and host Albright in a Saturday twinbill for Senior Day.
The Crusader women enter the final week on the heels of an impressive 57-45 victory over Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon — a win that sets up a semifinal rematch with the Blue Jays on February 21. Though the teams are even in the standings with identical 9-3 league records, the Blue Jays hold the tiebreaker over the Crusaders due a better record in non-league common games — which would result in a playoff at Elizabethtown should the teams finish the season tied for second place at 11-3.
Meanwhile, the men’s team will attempt to emerge from the cellar and spoil the postseason hopes of Albright, which enters the last week with a one-game lead over Messiah for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Commonwealth Conference.
THE MEN’S REPORT
The Crusaders lost their third Commonwealth Conference road game by three points or less with a 78-75 defeat at Lebanon Valley on Wednesday night. Susquehanna rallied from a late 14-point deficit to take a one-point lead in the final minute, but the Dutchmen survived five straight missed free throws in the final 30 seconds by grabbing three offensive rebounds to prevent the Crusaders from setting up a final possession.
On Saturday, the Crusaders tumbled 87-71 to visiting Elizabethtown despite trailing by just one point at halftime. The Crusaders shot just 35.1 percent from the field in losing for the seventh time in the last eight games.
