Crusader Men Seek Playoff Berth

SELINSGROVE, PA - The Susquehanna University men’s basketball team can clinch its first Commonwealth Conference playoff berth since the 1997-98 season with a victory over visiting Moravian on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. at O.W. Houts Gymnasium.

Admission is $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for school students, while Susquehanna faculty, staff and students are admitted free of charge. The game can also be heard on WQSU-FM (88.9) beginning at 7:45 p.m.

The Crusaders (13-10 overall, 6-6 Commonwealth) defeated the Greyhounds (13-10, 5-7) 81-68 in Bethlehem on January 23 behind a career-high 24 points from sophomore guard Chris Zimmerman (Coal Township, PA/Shamokin Area H.S.).

Susquehanna saw a three-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday as visiting Messiah recorded a 74-65 victory, while Moravian dropped its third straight conference game to visiting Widener 82-73 despite 22 points from freshman Brandon Zaleski. Zaleski leads the Greyhounds and ranks second in the Commonwealth Conference in scoring at 19.2 points per game.

While the Crusaders are looking to snap a three-year postseason drought, the Greyhounds are seeking their first postseason berth since the 1996-97 season. Both teams were edged out of the playoffs in 1999-2000 as Elizabethtown won a four-team tiebreaker for the final spot in the Commonwealth playoffs.

Susquehanna has qualified for the postseason seven times in 12 years under head coach Frank Marcinek, winning three regular-season championships and the 1991-92 Middle Atlantic Conference Northern Division playoff title. The Crusaders have appeared in the NCAA Division III tournament twice under Marcinek.

Even if the Crusaders are defeated by the Greyhounds on Tuesday, they can still earn the final playoff spot with a victory at Widener on Saturday afternoon.

Moravian closes the regular season with a trip to Juniata on Saturday afternoon.

The Commonwealth Conference playoffs open on Wednesday, February 20 with the fourth-place finisher playing at regular-season champion Elizabethtown.
