Zimmerman Named Commonwealth Second-Team All-Star

SELINSGROVE, PA – Susquehanna University sophomore point guard Chris Zimmerman has been named as a Commonwealth Conference men’s basketball second-team All-Star in voting by the league’s eight head coaches, the conference announced Tuesday.

Zimmerman (Coal Township, PA/Shamokin Area H.S.) led the Crusaders to a 14-12 overall record and fourth place in the Commonwealth Conference with a 7-7 league mark before falling to fourth-ranked and eventual champion Elizabethtown 80-77 in the conference semifinals last week.

The Crusaders have had at least one player on the Commonwealth Conference second All-Star team for six straight years, but have not had a first-team selection since Gerald Ross was named league MVP in 1995-96.

Zimmerman averaged 13.6 points and 5.6 assists per game for Susquehanna in his first season with the Crusaders after transferring from Division I Bucknell last spring. He led the Commonwealth Conference in free-throw percentage at 86.1 percent and finished second behind Elizabethtown’s Rocky Parise in assists.

A dynamic playmaker, Zimmerman posted seven or more assists in a game 10 times during the 2001-02 season, including a career-high 10 in a 79-76 victory over Moravian on February 12 that clinched Susquehanna’s first league playoff berth since the 1997-98 season.

His 145 assists are the fifth-most in one year in school history and the highest single-season total since Tres Wolf had a record 189 during the 1993-94 season. Despite shooting just 37 percent from the field for the year, Zimmerman connected on 32 three-pointers and scored in double figures 19 times in 26 games.

Widener’s Chaz Williamson was named Commonwealth Most Valuable Player and a first-team All-Star, while Elizabethtown placed Bob Porambo, Rocky Parise and Brian Loftus on the first team and Lebanon Valley was represented by center Darren Pugh.

Joining Zimmerman on the second team were Tim Whalen and Mike Siuchta of Widener, Terron Buchanon of Albright, Elizabethtown’s Jon English, and Moravian’s Brandon Zaleski, who also earned Rookie of the Year honors.

Elizabethtown head coach Bob Schlosser was named Coach of the Year for the second straight year and the third time in the last four seasons.
