Crusaders Among NCAA Men's Basketball Stat Leaders
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Three Susquehanna University men’s basketball players are included in the first weekly NCAA Division III statistics report, through games of January 4. Senior center Phil Sander is third in the nation in field-goal percentage at 73.2 percent and 34th in blocked shots with 2.1 per game, senior guard Chris Zimmerman is ranked 48th in assists per game with an average of 5.0, and sophomore center Walter Fowler is 41st in blocked shots at 1.9 per game. As a team, the Crusaders are third in Division III in field-goal percentage at 52.7 percent and sixth in three-point field-goal percentage at 44.0 percent. Sander (Hancock, NY/Walton Central H.S.) has shot 60 percent or better from the field in nine of Susquehanna’s first 10 games, and is second on the team in scoring at 13.5 points per game. Zimmerman (Coal Township, PA/Shamokin Area H.S.), who finished 26th in the nation in assists as a sophomore and 14th as a junior, leads the Commonwealth Conference in assists per game this season. He also leads the Crusaders in scoring average at 13.9 points per game. Fowler (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley H.S.) finished 19th in Division III in blocks per game last season with an average of 2.5 per game, as he rejected a school single-season record 66 shots. This season, he leads all Crusader subs in scoring at 7.9 points per game. Susquehanna’s team field-goal percentage of 52.7 percent ranks behind Wisconsin-Whitewater (53.8 percent) and Bridgewater (53.3 percent). The Crusaders have shot 50 percent or better from the field in seven of their 10 games, including two games above 60 percent. The Crusaders (8-2 overall) will host Catholic (9-1), ranked 15th in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, on Thursday at 8 p.m. in O.W. Houts Gymnasium.
