Sander, Zimmerman Named Second-Team All-Conference
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna University seniors Phil Sander and Chris Zimmerman have been named second-team All-Commonwealth Conference in voting by the league's eight head coaches, the conference announced Monday. The duo helped the Crusaders finish with a 15-9 overall record and in fifth place with a 7-7 league mark, as Susquehanna failed to qualify for the conference playoffs after being the unanimous choice to repeat as Commonwealth regular-season champions. Sander (Hancock, NY /Walton Central H.S.) averaged 12.8 points and 7.7 rebounds in 22 games during 2003-04. The 6-5 center led the Commonwealth Conference in field-goal percentage at 66.7 percent (116-for-174) and in blocked shots per game at 1.91 (42 in 22 games). For his career, Sander played in 68 games and finished with 532 points (7.8 per game), 406 rebounds (6.0 per game) and 91 blocks (1.3 per game). He ranks second in program history in field-goal percentage at 61.7 percent, making 219-of-355 shots in three seasons. Zimmerman (Coal Township, PA/Shamokin Area H.S.) earned All-Commonwealth honors for the third time in as many seasons with Susquehanna, as he was a second-team pick in 2001-02 and a first-team selection in 2002-03. The 5-10 guard led the Crusaders in scoring (13.1 points per game), assists (4.7 per game) and free-throw percentage (82.4 percent) while averaging a team-best 32.8 minutes per game. Zimmerman finished the regular season ranked second in the Commonwealth Conference in assists, third in foul shooting and seventh in scoring. In his Susquehanna career, Zimmerman scored 976 points (13.4 per game) and dished out 389 assists (5.3 per game) in 73 games to rank second in program history. He also ranks 12 th on the Susquehanna career list with 97 three-pointers and is sixth in free-throw percentage at 82.7 percent (239-for-289). Including the 27 points that he scored at Bucknell during the 1999-00 season prior to his transfer to Susquehanna, Zimmerman finished his college career with 1,003 points. Lebanon Valley junior guard J.D. Byers was named the conference's Most Valuable Player while Widener's Essien Ford captured Rookie of the Year honors. Albright head coach Rick Ferry, a former Crusader player and assistant, was named Coach of the Year.
