Zimmerman Named Commonwealth Player of the Week

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna University senior guard Chris Zimmerman has been named the Commonwealth Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week for the week ending January 4, the conference announced Monday.

Zimmerman (Coal Township, PA/Shamokin Area H.S.) was named tournament MVP of the Radisson Invitational after leading the Crusaders to victories over Gettysburg and 20th-ranked Clark by averaging 13.0 points and 6.5 assists per game.

It is the second time in his career that Zimmerman has been selected Commonwealth Player of the Week, as he also earned the honor in December, 2001.

He scored 12 of his game-high 15 points in the second half, including eight foul shots in the final two minutes, to lead the Crusaders past the Bullets 66-57 in the opening game on Saturday, then finished with 11 points and eight assists as Susquehanna defeated the Cougars 87-75 for their first win over a ranked opponent in almost exactly three years.

For the season, Zimmerman leads the Crusaders and ranks seventh in the Commonwealth Conference in scoring at 13.9 points per game, and leads the conference in assists per game (5.0). He also ranks eighth in the league in both steals (1.9 per game) and free-throw percentage (.842).

Susquehanna (8-2 overall) will look to continue its best start since 1997-98 when the Crusaders host 18th-ranked Catholic on Thursday at 8 p.m. at O.W. Houts Gymnasium.
