Going Out with Honors

Hazleton Area's Makarewicz Makes MAC Men's Basketball Honor Roll
Becomes 27th Player in Susquehanna Men's History to Surpass 1,000 Points

SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Susquehanna University senior guard and co-captain Rob Makarewicz (Sugarloaf/Hazleton Area H.S.) is on this week's Middle Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Honor Roll as he averaged 20.5 points and shot 44.4 percent (8 of 18) from three-point range in the 1-1 week – also becoming the 27th player in Susquehanna history to surpass 1,000 career points.

The 6-2 Makarewicz ended his career impressively, scoring a career high 33 points while hitting a career best seven three-pointers (out of 12 attempts) in Susquehanna's heartbreaking 71-69 loss at Albright Saturday. The Crusaders needed to win to make the MAC playoffs and Makarewicz led the effort against the regionally-ranked Lions. He needed 26 points for 1,000 coming into the game – meaning he finished 27th on the Crusaders men's basketball career scoring list with 1,007 points. Makarewicz also averaged four rebounds in the two games last week.

"Robbie is a great kid and he deserves everything he has achieved," said 11th-year head coach Frank Marcinek. "He's certainly been a winner in our program throughout his career and gave us everything he had right to the end."

Makarewicz led the team in scoring this season at 17.8 points per game, finishing fourth in the MAC Commonwealth Conference – scoring in double figures in 22 of the team's 24 games. He also led the team in free throw shooting at 84.4 percent (92 of 109) and steals with 45 (1.9 per game) – ranking third in the conference in free throw accuracy and tied for third in steals. He was also second on the team in three-point field goals with 46 of 138 (33.3%), ranking fifth in the Commonwealth Conference in three-pointers per game (1.9).

An accounting major, he is the son of Robert and Agnes Makarewicz of Sugarloaf.

Susquehanna posted its ninth winning season in the 11 under Marcinek, finishing at 13-11 overall, 6-8 and part of a four-way tie for the fourth and final MAC Commonwealth Conference playoff spot. The Crusaders missed the playoffs through a tie-breaker.
