SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Three-time MAC Commonwealth League first-team All-Star offensive tackle Randy Zook is one of five Susquehanna University football players named to the 2000 Football Gazette Division III South Region All-Star team, announced Thursday.
Zook, a 6-5, 260-pound tri-captain, earned first-team honors for the second time in his career and was named to the All-Region squad for the third consecutive season.
He was joined by a pair of second-team selection in sophomore defensive back Antonio Nash and senior defensive lineman Frank Hanlon along with third-team honorees in sophomore quarterback Mike Bowman and sophomore kicker Andy Nadler.
Together, the five players helped the Crusaders to their 15th consecutive non-losing season in 2000, as Susquehanna finished with a 7-3 overall record (6-3 Middle Atlantic Conference) under 11th-year head coach Steve Briggs.
Zook (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley H.S.), who was also named the MAC Offensive Lineman of the Year and an honorable mention Hewlett-Packard All-American, helped the Crusaders rank second in the MAC in total offense at 391.4 yards per game during the 2000 season. Zook started all 10 games at left tackle and was honored with his linemates as members of the D3football.com Team of the Week after the Crusaders knocked off Dickinson 24-13 in the first game at Lopardo Stadium on September 23.
Last season, Zook was a second-team All-South selection after earning first-team honors during his sophomore year of 1998. He is a public relations major and the son of Raymond and Joann Zook.
Nash (Washington, D.C./Springbrook, Md., H.S.), a 5-9, 170-pound defensive back, shifted from cornerback to free safety following the season opener and finished the year second on the team in tackles with 74 (53 solo). He intercepted three passes to increase his career total to 13, and was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week after making a career-high 13 tackles and intercepting a pass in the Crusaders’ 26-23 win at King’s on September 16.
Nash was a Football Gazette first-team All-American last season as a freshman and has earned MAC Commonwealth League first-team All-Star honors in each of his two seasons at Susquehanna. He is an accounting major and the son of Sampson Nash, Jr.
Hanlon (Mahanoy City, Pa./Mahanoy Area H.S.), a 6-4, 210-pound defensive end, led the defensive line with 55 tackles (34 solo), ranked sixth in the MAC with 21 tackles for loss and finished eighth in the conference in sacks with eight. Hanlon was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week after recording three sacks and forcing a fumble in the Crusaders’ 36-29 victory over Juniata at Lopardo Stadium on October 7.
Hanlon was honored as the team's Most Valuable Player following the season and was a MAC Commonwealth League first-team All-Star. He is a history major and the son of Frank and Joan Hanlon.
Bowman (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy H.S.) enjoyed a record-setting year in his first full year as the Crusaders' starting quarterback. The 6-0, 170-pound Bowman completed 184 passes in 354 attempts for 2563 yards and 20 touchdowns — all single-season Susquehanna records. In addition, he broke career records at Susquehanna in completions (295) and attempts (578).
A mathematics major, Bowman is the son of Richard and Janice Bowman.
Nadler (Westport, Conn./Staples H.S.) finished second in the MAC in kick scoring with 51 points, and led the conference in field goals — converting 8-of-11 attempts (72.7 percent). He was successful on 28-of-33 extra-point attempts.
A business major, Nadler is the son of Kenneth and Hellen Nadler.
