Earning a Spot on the Bench

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Former Shikellamy High School basketball standout Phil Campbell has been named men's assistant basketball coach at Susquehanna University, head coach Frank Marcinek has announced. Campbell replaces Bryan Goodman, who resigned last week to pursue another coaching opportunity.

Campbell, a 1996 graduate of Lebanon Valley College, will serve as head junior varsity coach and work with the post players in addition to assisting Marcinek on the Crusader bench during varsity action.

"I'm pleased to be able to hire Phil to work in our program," said Marcinek, who is 159-118 entering his 12th season as Crusader head coach. "His background as a player and the coaching experience he brings with him will be a big plus for our program."

A 1,000-point scorer at Shikellamy before graduating in 1992, Campbell was a two-year starter at Lebanon Valley who averaged 9.0 points and 5.1 rebounds in his career. During his sophomore season of 1993-94, the Flying Dutchmen won the NCAA Division III men's basketball championship, and as a senior he ranked second on the team with 12.3 points and led the Dutchmen with 6.4 rebounds per game.

After earning his degree in elementary education in 1996, Campbell remained in Annville as an assistant coach under Brad McAlester during the 1996-97 season. He then returned to Shikellamy and coached at the middle school level for two years before moving to North Carolina, where he taught and coached at the grade-school level last year.

"Having someone with his knowledge to coach our post players and our JV team will be beneficial to the entire program," added Marcinek.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Campbell is employed by Anthracite Behavioral Health Service in Mt. Carmel. He resides in Sunbury. #jem/554#
