Susquehanna Cross Country Teams Honored for Academic Success

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The United States Cross Country Coaches Association has recognized the Susquehanna University men's and women's cross country squads by selecting them as All-Academic Teams for the 2000 season.

In addition, six Crusader runners have been honored individually by the USCCCA for earning grade-point averages of at least 3.5 during the fall semester.

The men's team fashioned a team grade-point average of 3.31 during the fall semester, with five runners earning individual honors, as the Crusaders finished third at the Middle Atlantic Conference championships and eighth at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional under second-year head coach Craig Penney.

Senior Micha Van Waesberghe (Axel, the Netherlands/Reynaert) led the way with a 3.93 grade-point average during the 2000 fall semester. Van Waesberghe finished 16th at the MAC championships and placed 42nd at the NCAA regional meet. He is a Spanish major and the son of Jo and Kitty Van Waesberghe.

Freshman Ryan Gleason (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop H.S.) recorded a 3.67 grade-point average last fall, finishing seventh at the MAC championships and 23rd at the NCAA Mideast Regional meet. He is a political science major and the son of Robert and Linda Gleason.

Junior Rob Logan (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood H.S.) finished the fall semester with a 3.67 grade-point average and ran 66th at the MAC championships. Logan finished 124th at the Mideast Regional where he posted a season-best time of 29:38.80. He is a computer science major and the son of Emerson and Carol Logan.

Junior Jake Trevino (Danville, Pa./Danville H.S.) posted a 3.67 grade-point average during the fall, turning in a 23rd place finish at the MAC championships and finishing 53rd at the NCAA regional championship. He is a physics and mathematics major and the son of Usbaldo and Debbie Trevino.

Junior Mike Lehtonen (Laurens, N.Y./Morris Central H.S.) earned a 3.51 grade-point average during the fall semester. The individual champion at the Susquehanna Invitational, Lehtonen finished fourth at the MAC championships and 100th at the NCAA regional meet. He is a mathematics major and is the son of William and Nancy Lehtonen.

The women's team posted a composite 3.08 grade-point average during the fall, a season that saw the Crusaders place third at the MAC championships and 10th at the NCAA Mideast Regional meet.

Freshman Amanda Phillips (Waymart, Pa./Western Wayne H.S.) was the lone Crusader women's runner to earn All-Academic honors during the fall. She finished with a 3.67 semester grade-point average and placed 24th at the MAC championships. In addition, Phillips took 98th place at the NCAA Mideast Regional meet. She is a marketing major and the daughter of David and Cherie Phillips.
