Academic All-America, All-District

Huntingdon’s Cook, Hershey’s Murray Make GTE All-District II
Academic All-America Women’s Fall/Winter At-Large Second Team

SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Junior swimmer and tri-captain Charlotte Murray (Hummelstown/Hershey H.S.) and sophomore field hockey goalkeeper Kylie Cook (Huntingdon/Huntingdon Area H.S.) have both made the 2000 GTE All-District II Academic All-America College Division Women’s Fall/Winter At-Large Second Team. The team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in the District II region.

Susquehanna is the only school to place two athletes on the all-district second-team.

To be nominated for the GTE Academic All-America Team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average (out of a 4.0 scale), and either a starter or significant reserve on their respective teams. College Division District II includes all NCAA Division II and III schools, as well as NAIA Division II schools from Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The at-large team includes women’s nominees from seven sports — cross country, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, rifle, skiing, soccer, and swimming — and inclusion on the second-team makes Murray and Cook two of the top 20 picks in the district.

Murray was third in the Middle Atlantic Conference in the 1,650-yard freestyle this season with a season best time of 19:07.83. She was sixth in 500-free with a time of 5:38.16, and 12th in the 200-yard free with a time of 2:12.81. Murray also was on two placewinning relays at MACs — swimming on the fifth-place 400-yard free relay team (3:53.30) and the sixth-place 800-free relay (8:25.28).

For the year, she had the team’s best times in the 500 (5:32.65), 1,000 (11:30.10) and 1,650 (19:07.83) freestyle, and swam on the fastest relays in three events. She accomplished all of this despite missing the first semester schedule while studying abroad in London.

Murray holds school records in the 500 (5:26.26, 1999), 1,000 (11:13.98) and 1,650 (18:43.80) freestyle, also swimming on the school record 800-free relay (8:19.45, 1999).

Out of the pool, Murray has made the Dean’s List here all four semesters and is also active in the Honors Program. She has been inducted into Beta Beta Beta (biology honor society), Alpha Lambda Delta (freshman honor society), and Sigma Alpha Iota (women’s professional music society). She has earned an assistantship at the school – one of the top financial aid awards based on academic merit – working in the school’s Alumni Office. She also participates in the school’s Handbell Choir and the Arts Alive! volunteer project.

Murray has made the MAC Academic Honor Roll twice as a biology and German double-major. She is the daughter of W. Bosseau and Jannette Murray.

Cook, who never played as a goalkeeper before her freshman season, was an AstroTurf/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Second Team All-South Atlantic Region selection, as well as a first-team MAC Commonwealth All-Star last fall. She led the conference in both goals-against average and save percentage, finishing with a 1.05 goals-against mark and .838 save clip. She made 88 saves and allowed just 17 goals in the 17 games she played this season. For her two-year career, Cook now has a 1.10 goals-against mark and .855 save percentage.

She has been on the Dean’s List all three semesters thus far and has been inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta (freshman honor society). She has also been an advisor and active on O-Team (the school’s student orientation committee), Circle-K (a service organization), and as a caller for the admissions Phone-A-Thon. She has a campus work-study job in the Communications/Theatre Arts Department.

A business major who also made the MAC Commonwealth Conference Field Hockey Academic Honor Roll, Cook is the daughter of Rodney and Pamela Cook.
