Breaking Her Own Record

Costello Breaks Her Own School Record in the 3,000-Meter Run Last Sat.

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Senior co-captain Sarah Costello (Palmyra/Palmyra H.S.) broke her own Susquehanna University school record in the 3,000-meter run last Saturday as the women's track team competed in a tri-meet at Messiah College with Elizabethtown.

She shattered the previous record by nearly 18 seconds with a time of 11:04.50. Her old record was 11:22.09 set in 1998.

"I thought it was probably her best race to date," said first-year women's track and field head coach Craig Penney. "I was really pleased with the way she ran the race. She was in total control."

Her first-place finish helped lead the Crusaders to finish second in the meet with 88 points. Messiah won the event with 167, while Elizabethtown was third with 68 points.

Costello also holds two other school records in distance events. In 1999 she set the record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:45.40 and in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 41:21.53.

She is a business major and the daughter of Kevin and Louise Costello of Palmyra.
