Sending the Whole Lineup

All Six Starters Going to MAC Championships This Weekend at E-town

SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) — The Susquehanna University men’s tennis team will be sending its entire starting lineup to the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships this Friday and Saturday at Elizabethtown College.

Senior co-captain Corey Hunter (Mountoursville/Montoursville H.S.) and sophomore Ben DeBell (Concord, N.H./Londonderry H.S.) will team up to play doubles this weekend. They made it to the MAC semifinals in this event last season before finishing 5-5, compiling a 3-4-1 record while playing number-one doubles this season. Hunter is one of only seven players to win 30 career singles matches at Susquehanna, finishing 5-3 this season at number-two to make him 33-15 (.688) for his Crusader career.

Also playing doubles this weekend will be the team of sophomore Ben Stapelfeld (Duncansville/Hollidaysburg Area H.S.) and freshman Rob Logan (Montain Top/Crestwood Area H.S.). That team has only played two matches this season togther, going 1-1. Logan has the best singles’ record on the team, finishing at 8-3.

Competing in the singles competition will be the team’s top-seeded singles player in sophomore Tim Peters (Ipswitch, Mass./Millbrook School). Peters advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles tournament last season and has gone 6-6 at number-one this season. Sophomore Don Eckert (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) will round out the Crusader contingent and also play singles where he has won just two of his 12 matches at number-three this season. Peters and Eckert teamed up to go 8-2 at number-two doubles this season.

Under 19th-year coach Gary Fincke, the Crusaders finished the team season at 5-7 overall, 2-4 and in fifth-place in the MAC Commonwealth League.
