Menold Also in Jav at Men's Nationals, Fenstermacher "On the Bubble" in Triple Jump

SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Defending NCAA Division III women's javelin national champion and Susquehanna University sophomore Janee Shaner of Hughesville (Hughesville High School) will officially defend her title as she automatically qualified for outdoor nationals Wednesday with a winning throw of 135-6 in the Seamus McElligott Invitational at Haverford College.

The 1999 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships will be held next Thursday through Saturday, May 20-22, at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.

Shaner's throw Wednesday was the third-longest in Division III this season, and was her longest since throwing 137-7 to win the championship last year – becoming Susquehanna's first women's national champion.

Coe College senior Dana Voss has the longest throw this year at 140-9. Voss was fifth at nationals last season.

In addition to Shaner, Crusader senior Matt Menold of Swedesboro, N.J. (Kingsway H.S.) is an automatic qualifier on the men's side and will make his third-straight trip to nationals. He recorded the third-longest throw in Division III this season with his school-record toss of 204-5 at the Dickinson Invitational on April 24. Fellow senior Frank Arenella of Bloomsburg (Central Columbia H.S.) also provisionally qualified with a throw of 188-8 at the Susquehanna Invitational on March 27, but is seeded just 27th as of this week and will not make the field.

Springfield College junior Nick Guerette has the longest throw this year at 218-2 and was runner-up in this event last year. Rowan senior Ed Collerton is the defending champion (210-4) and has this year's second-longest throw at 215-2.

Former Lewisburg High School and Susquehanna throwing standout Cris Delbaugh is in his eighth year as the throwing coach for both the Crusader men's and women's teams.

Crusader junior Matt Fenstermacher of Watsontown (Warrior Run H.S.) is also squarely "on the bubble" for nationals in the triple jump. Fenstermacher is presently seeded 15th with his provisional qualifying jump of 46-8¾ on April 30 while finishing second at the MAC Championships. While the event also calls for a minimum field of 15, the Division III Championship Committee took 18 participants in the event last season.

Mt. Union senior Shawn Watson has the best triple jump during the outdoor season in Division III at 50-5¼ and was 1998 national runner-up. Lincoln senior Thomas Thompson is the defending champion (50-10¼) and has the second-longest jump this season at 50-4. Fenstermacher beat Thompson in the long jump at the Colonial Relays on Friday, April 2, with a school record jump of 23-3½.

Both the men's javelin and triple jump at nationals are scheduled for Saturday morning at 10 and 10:30 a.m. respectively.

The Susquehanna men's track and field team is under the direction of 21st-year head coach Jim Taylor, who has coached six Division III men's national champions and 31 All-Americans during his tenure at Susquehanna. Taylor was also the head coach of the women's team when Shaner won her championship last year. Karen Brandt is now in her first year as the women's head coach.
