Three Crusaders Make Track & Field Nationals

Fenstermacher Makes Triple Jump Field, Joins Javelin Throwers Menold, Shaner
Shaner to Defend National Championship at NCAA Event, Thu.-Sat. at Baldwin-Wallace

SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Sophomore Janee Shaner of Hughesville (Hughesville High School) will try and defend her national championship in the javelin and leads a group of three Susquehanna University athletes who will be competing at the 1999 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, this Thursday through Saturday, May 20-22, at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.

Joining Shaner in the Crusader contingent will be senior javelin thrower and three-time national qualifier Matt Menold of Swedesboro, N.J. (Kingsway H.S.) and junior Matt Fenstermacher of Watsontown (Warrior Run H.S.), who was the last qualifier taken for the 16-man triple jump field.

Shaner's winning throw of 135-6 last Wednesday in the Seamus McElligott Invitational at Haverford College was the third-longest in Division III this season, and was her longest since throwing 137-7 to win the championship last year. Shaner became Susquehanna's first women's national champion last year despite her diminutive 5-3 size.

"We figured something out in her technique last Wednesday and she (Shaner) is now throwing like she did last season," said Susquehanna's eighth-year throwing coach Cris Delbaugh, who was former throwing standout at both Susquehanna and nearby Lewisburg High School. "She's got her confidence back now and has a good chance to repeat."

Coe College senior Dana Voss has the longest throw this year at 140-9 and was fifth at nationals last season.

The women's javelin competition will take place Friday morning beginning at 11 a.m.

Menold is seeded fourth in the men's javelin with his school-record toss of 204-5 to win the Dickinson Invitational on April 24. He was 14th at nationals last year while throwing 160-0.

"Matt is certainly capable of getting off a long one. I'm expecting good things from him because he's been there twice before and this is his last chance to do the kind of things he's wanted to do," said Delbaugh.

Springfield College junior Nick Guerette has the longest throw this year at 218-2 and was runner-up in this event last year. Rowan senior Ed Collerton is the defending champion (210-4) and has this year's second-longest throw at 215-2.

Fenstermacher just made the cut with his provisional qualifying jump of 46-8¾ on April 30 while finishing second at the MAC Championships. This will be his first trip to nationals.

"Matt has become one of the best competitors I've ever coached. He may be seeded last going in, but I'm sure he'll battle with the best of them. He deserves to be there," said 21st-year Crusader men's head coach Jim Taylor.

Mt. Union senior Shawn Watson has the best triple jump during the outdoor season in Division III at 50-5¼ and was 1998 national runner-up. Lincoln senior Thomas Thompson is the defending champion (50-10¼) and has the second-longest jump this season at 50-4. Fenstermacher beat Thompson in the long jump at the Colonial Relays on Friday, April 2, with a school record jump of 23-3½.

Both the men's javelin and triple jump events are scheduled for Saturday morning at 10 and 10:30 a.m. respectively.

Taylor has coached six Division III men's national champions and 31 All-Americans during his tenure at Susquehanna. He was also the head coach of the women's team when Shaner won her championship last year. Karen Brandt is now in her first year as the women's head coach.
