Setting the Staff, Schedule

Glenn Fausey Returns to Susquehanna as D-Line Coach;
1999 Schedule Features Renewals with FDU-Madison, Dickinson

SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) — After a two-year absence, former Shikellamy High School and Murray State defensive line standout Glenn Fausey will return to the Susquehanna University football staff this season as defensive line coach. Fausey had coached the Crusader defensive line from 1990-96.

Fausey replaces Bob Chesney, who coached the Crusader defensive line last year but recently became the new head football coach at North Schuylkill High School.

With his football staff in place, 10th-year head coach Steve Briggs is now looking forward to the 1999 schedule — which will feature series renewals with FDU-Madison and Dickinson. The Crusaders will play Middle Atlantic Conference rival FDU-Madison for the first time since 1984 as they host the Jersey Devils in the season-opener on September 4. After a two-year absence, Susquehanna and Dickinson will meet in a non-conference game in Carlisle on Saturday, September 25.

Glenn Fausey

Fausey will be in his eighth season with the Crusader staff as the defensive line coach, previously serving from 1990 through ’96. During his earlier tenure, he was responsible for coaching Crusader All-American defensive linemen Keith Henry, Eric Hancock and John Heim.

Fausey was an All-Anthracite pick by The Reading Eagle and an alternate for the Pennsylvania Big 33 Team while starring at Shikellamy High School before graduating in 1966. He was a key starter on Shikellamy’s undefeated Eastern Conference championship team in 1965.

He went on to also star at Massanet Military Prep School (Va.), earning first-team All-Virginia Prep honors before transferring to NCAA Division I-AA Murray State — where he was an All-Ohio Conference defensive end for two years. He graduated from Murray State in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in speech communication.

He returned to Shikellamy as an assistant coach in charge of the freshman team in 1984.

“Having Glenn Fausey rejoin our staff immediately makes us a better team. He knows our system, he knows our players, and is an intense and energetic football coach,” says Briggs, who brought Fausey in initially during his first season as head coach.

Fausey resides in Selinsgrove and has two sons, Mark and Brett.

A Look at FDU-Madison

FDU-Madison will be seeking its first win over Susquehanna, losing all previous seven meetings, including a 21-7 decision in Selinsgrove on October 20, 1984 — the last time these two teams met. The Jersey Devils are hoping to be improve upon last season’s 2-8 record and return 19 starters (9 off., 10 def.) and 39 letterwinners for third-year head coach Larry Arico (2-18, .100).

Among the returnees is 1998 MAC Freedom League First Team All-Star linebacker and senior Tom Poullot, who averaged nearly 16 tackles a game last season and is second all-time at the school with 290 in his career. On the offensive side of the ball, senior right

tackle John Miscia is a two-year All-MAC player.

Briggs has won all nine of his previous season-openers as head coach and the Susquehanna program has won its last 10, last losing one with a 26-13 loss at Muhlenberg in 1988.

A Look at Dickinson

Dickinson has won two-straight games in the series vs. Susquehanna, including a 16-14 decision on September 28, 1996 to ruin Susquehanna’s homecoming in the last meeting between the two. The Red Devils now have a 15-5-1 (.738) series lead. Dickinson plays in the Centennial Conference and captured the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Southwest Championship last season with a 35-28 win at Wesley to finish 8-3. Seventh-year head coach Darwin Breaux (44-18-1, .706) has just 11 starters back (6 off., 5 def.) among 31 returning letterwinners from that squad.

“Once again, we have one of the most competitive schedules in Division III. We know the additions of both FDU-Madison and Dickinson will add to our weekly competition and we’ll have to be at our best each week if we are going to be successful,” says Briggs, who is the winningest head coach in Crusader football history at 61-31 (.663).

Briggs returns 13 starters (7 off., 5 def., 1 ks) and 24 letterwinners from last season’s 6-3 squad, which shared the MAC Commonwealth League championship with Widener. The Crusader program has posted 13-straight non-losing seasons, including all nine under Briggs.
