Surfing the NetKern Chosen as Honorable Mention All-American by D3hoops.com
SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Susquehanna senior center Karyn Kern has added to her growing list of honors by being selected as a Division III honorable mention All-American in women's basketball by D3hoops.com. Kern (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley H.S.), a four-time Commonwealth Conference All-Star, was a second-team preseason All-American selection by D3hoops.com. She is the second Crusader women's basketball player to earn D3hoops.com All-American status as Kristen Venne was a first-team selection in 1998-99 and a third-team pick in 1997-98. Granted a fifth year of eligibility following a knee injury five games into last season, Kern tied for the Commonwealth Conference lead in scoring (16.8 points per game) and blocked shots (1.50 blocks per game) this year while leading the league in rebounding at 11.0 per contest. She was named a Commonwealth Conference first-team All-Star for the second time in her career. Kern finished her Susquehanna career as the third-leading scorer in school history with 1,773 points and the leading rebounder with 1,079 boards in 106 games. She also finished her career as the Middle Atlantic Conference career leader in field-goal percentage at 59.7 percent and ranked second in rebounding with 10.2 rebounds per game. In addition, she posted 14 double-doubles during the 2000-01 season and 56 in her career. A 2000 Susquehanna graduate with a bachelor's degree in psychology, Kern is pursuing a second degree in corporate communications and was named to the Verizon District II College Division Women's Basketball All-Academic Team last month. She is the daughter of Peter and Carol Kern of Brodheadsville. The complete team can be viewed here.
