Kern Named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week

Crusader Women's Hoops Standout Averages 18 Points, 9.5 Rebounds in Two Wins

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Susquehanna University senior center Karyn Kern has been named the first Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in women's basketball for the 2000-2001 season. It is the fifth time in her career that she has earned conference player of the week honors.

Kern (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley H.S.), averaged 18.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in two games to earn Most Valuable Player honors for the second straight year as the Crusaders won the season-opening Pepsi/Weis Markets Tip Off Tournament with weekend victories over Gallaudet (72-67) and Alvernia (83-54).

Last season, Kern averaged 26.2 points and 13.2 rebounds in five games before suffering torn ligaments and cartilage damage in her right knee in an 83-80 win over Messiah on November 30. She was granted a fifth season of eligibility by the NCAA last spring.

For her career, Kern is averaging 16.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest, while shooting 61.0 percent from the floor. She ranks fifth on the Susquehanna career scoring list with 1,394 points and fourth with 815 rebounds. In 1998-99, Kern led Division III by shooting a MAC-record 65.0 percent from the field en route to earning Commonwealth Conference All-Star honors for the third straight season.

The Crusaders (2-0) will travel to Ursinus on Tuesday, November 21 for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game.
