Kern Leads Latest D-III Stats in FG Percentage, Venne 12th in Scoring
Crusader Women Sixth Nationally in FG Percentage, 19th on the Free Throw Line


SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) -- Susquehanna University junior center Karyn Kern (Brodheadsville/Pleasant Valley H. S.) is the NCAA Division III leader in field goal percentage according to the latest statistics, which cover games through January 17. The 6-2 Kern, who led the MAC in field goal percentage last season and finished second as a freshman, is presently shooting 67.2 percent from the field (90 or 134)

Crusader senior All-American power forward Kristen Venne (Shillington/Governor Mifflin H.S.) is also 12th in Division III women's scoring. Also second in the MAC, the 5-9 Venne is averaging 21.3 points per game.

In addition to the individual leaders, the Susquehanna women's basketball team is also ranked sixth in Division III team field goal percentage and 19th in free throw percentage. The Crusaders, who are second in the MAC in both categories, are shooting 47.0 percent from the field as a team (401 of 854), hitting 71.2 percent from the free throw line (203 of 285).

Venne and Kern are both among the women's career leaders at Susquehanna in scoring and rebounding. Venne is second in scoring with 1,648 points, and third in rebounding with 762, while Kern is ninth in scoring with 1,024 points and just 26 rebounds shy of the top five in rebounding - presently with 603.

Now at 9-5 overall, 4-2 and tied for second in the MAC Commonwealth League, the Crusaders host Juniata Saturday afternoon during the 1 p.m. game of a women's/men's doubleheader. The Crusader men, who are 12th in the nation in three-pointers per game (8.8 per game), will play the Eagles at 3 p.m.

The Crusader women will play their biggest game of the season Monday at 8 p.m., hosting the University of Scranton, which is 13-1 and ranked eight in the latest Division III poll. The Crusader men will play Messiah at 6 p.m. in the make-up of their postponed January 13 MAC Commonwealth League game.
