Player of the Last Two Weeks
Gov. Mifflin Grad Venne Repeats as MAC Commonwealth League Player of Week
SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) -- Susquehanna University senior power forward and tri-captain Kristen Venne of Shillington (Governor Mifflin High School) is the Middle Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for a second-straight week. Venne earned honors after being named the Most Valuable Player at last weekend's Days Inn Gettysburg Tournament while leading the Crusaders to the championship.
Venne averaged 23.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.5 steals in the two tournament wins, also shooting 60.0 percent from the field (21 of 35). Despite being sick, she equaled her career high with 29 points in a 75-66 win vs. York, also making a career high seven steals and grabbing six rebounds. She followed that up with a game high 17 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday's 49-45 victory over host Gettysburg in the championship game, scoring in double figures for the 25th-straight time and 82nd time in 84 collegiate games.
A two-time All-American, Venne is second in career scoring (1,589) and third in career rebounding (718) on the Susquehanna women's all-time list. She leads the team, is second in the MAC and 10th in Division III in scoring (21.7 ppg), and also leads the team in steals (2.8 per game). She is second on the team in field goal percentage (55.9%, 90 of 161), ranking fourth in the MAC, and is second on the squad in rebounding (7.1 per game).
"Kristen never ceases to amaze me with that she can do. Her performance this past weekend was truly remarkable because I know she wasn't feeling 100 percent, and yet she made those shots with people hanging all over her," said 12th-year Crusader head coach Mark Hribar. "That's just what we've grown to expect from her."
Also an Academic All-American candidate as a psychology major, she is the daughter of Richard and Ann Venne of Shillington.
Now 7-4 overall, Susquehanna returns home for the first time in six games as it hosts a key MAC Commonwealth League game vs. 9-2 Messiah Tuesday at 7 p.m. Both teams are 2-1 in the league and tied for second. The game will feature free admission to all fans.
