Gov. Mifflin Grad Venne Makes MAC Honor Roll for Second-Straight Week
SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) -- Susquehanna University senior power forward and tri-captain Kristen Venne of Shillington (Governor Mifflin High School) is on the Middle Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Honor Roll for a second-straight week after leading her team to a key MAC Commonwealth League win over Lebanon Valley, and then scoring a team high 17 in Saturday's loss at Western Maryland.
A two-time returning NCAA Division III All-American and three-time first-team Commonwealth League All-Star, the 5-9 Venne was just two points off tying her career high as she scored a game high 27 in last Tuesday's 86-64 home league rout of Lebanon Valley. She went 11 for 15 from the field and was 5 for 5 from the line, also dishing out four assists and grabbing four rebounds. She scored 17 points and had a game high five steals with four rebounds in Saturday's 79-61 loss at 6-1 Western Maryland. For the week, she averaged 22.0 points while shooting 57.8 percent from the field (19 of 33) and hitting all six of her free throw attempts. She also averaged 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.0 assists in the two games.
For the season, She is third in Susquehanna women's history in both career scoring and rebounding with 1,481 points (Record: 2,075, Deb Yeasted, 1981-85) and 675 rebounds (Record: 996, Megan Lytle, 1991-95). Venne leads the team in scoring (21.8 ppg), ranking second in the MAC, and is also second on the squad and in the MAC in field goal percentage (now 63.5%, 47 of 74). She is also second on the team in rebounding (5.8 per game) and steals (2.8 per game).
The scoring output left Venne just two points shy of becoming the third player in Susquehanna women's history to surpass 1,500 career points. She is 42 points away from moving past Laurie Pankuck (1,539 points, 1987-91) into second on the program's career scoring list, and is also third in career rebounding with 679. She has now scored in double-figures in 21-straight games, and 77 of 79 at Susquehanna.
Venne leads the team and is second in the MAC in scoring (21.1 ppg), also leading the squad in steals (3.1 per game). She also is second on the team and third in the conference in field goal percentage (59.8%, 55 of 92), and is second on the team in rebounding (5.6 per game).
Also an Academic All-American candidate as a psychology major, she is the daughter of Richard and Ann Venne of Shillington.
Susquehanna completed its first semester play at 4-3 overall, 2-1 and tied for third in the MAC Commonwealth League. The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, December 29, with a 5 p.m. game vs. Hanover (Ind.) in a tournament at the University of Scranton.
