Make It Three of Four Weeks
Venne MAC Commonwealth League Player of Week for Third Time in Four Weeks
Also Makes D-III Online Team of the Week for a Third Time, Debut WQSU Player
SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) -- Susquehanna University senior power forward and tri-captain Kristen Venne of Shillington (Governor Mifflin High School) is the Middle Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the third time in four weeks. She also is on the Division III Basketball Online Team of the Week for a third time this season, and is the first WQSU-FM Player of the Week. Venne earned honors after posting double-doubles in points and rebounds while averaging 18.0 points and 15.5 boards in two league victories last week.
The 5-9 Venne shot 58.3 percent from the field (14 of 24) and 72.7 percent from the line (8 of 11) while scoring her points, also averaging 3.0 assists per game. She had 21 points and just missed tying her career high in rebounds by one with 18 in a 77-48 win at Albright - going 8 of 9 from the field in the process. While she struggled a big in Saturday's 64-52 win over Juniata, scoring "just" 15 points with 13 boards, she had six points as the Crusaders went on a 10-2 run to start the second half after being tied at 30 at halftime.
Venne added a game high 18 points and had 10 rebounds in Monday's 72-51 loss to eighth-ranked Scranton for her sixth-straight double-double, and eighth in nine games. She has scored in double-figures now in 30-straight games and 87 of 89 during her collegiate career. She is second in career scoring at Susquehanna with 1,681 points, and third in rebounds with 785.
A two-time All-American, Venne is 12th in Division III and second in the MAC in scoring (now 20.7 ppg), tied for second in MAC rebounding (now 9.1 per game), and fourth in field goal percentage (now 56.1%, 124 of 221).
"Kristen has really gotten the job done lately. How else can you explain all the double-doubles she's had," said 12th-year Crusader head coach Mark Hribar. "She's really picked up the rebounding pace since the semester break and has become a real leader for this team."
Also an Academic All-American candidate as a psychology major, she is the daughter of Richard and Ann Venne of Shillington.
Now 10-6 overall, 5-2 and tied for second in the Commonwealth League, Susquehanna plays at league rival Moravian Wednesday and returns home Saturday for a 1 p.m. showdown with defending champ and current leader Elizabethtown.
