Gov. Mifflin Grad Venne Earns Honors from MAC, D-III Online, Columbus Multimedia
SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) -- Susquehanna University senior power forward and tri-captain Kristen Venne of Shillington (Governor Mifflin High School) is the Columbus Multimedia Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Week and on the D-III Basketball Online's "Team of the Week." She is also on the Middle Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Honor Roll for leading her team to two wins in three games last week.
A two-time returning NCAA Division III All-American and three-time first-team Commonwealth League All-Star, the 5-9 Venne averaged 21.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in the three games while shooting 59.0 percent from the field (23 of 39) and 70.8 percent from the line (17 of 24). She made her second All-Tournament Team in as many events this season with her selection at last weekend's Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic. She had a game-high 25 points in the team's 73-38 rout of Moravian in its Commonwealth League opener last Tuesday, going 9 of 13 from the field and 7 of 9 from the line while grabbing four rebounds and making a game high six steals.
Venne was just two points off tying her career high as she scored a game high 27 last night in the team's 86-64 rout of Lebanon Valley. She went 11 for 15 from the field and was 5 for 5 from the line as she scored in double figures in 20-straight games and 76 of 78 collegiately. She is third in Susquehanna women's history in both career scoring and rebounding with 1,481 points (Record: 2,075, Deb Yeasted, 1981-85) and 675 rebounds (Record: 996, Megan Lytle, 1991-95). Venne leads the team in scoring (21.8 ppg), ranking second in the MAC, and is also second on the squad and in the MAC in field goal percentage (now 63.5%, 47 of 74). She is also second on the team in rebounding (5.8 per game) and steals (2.8 per game).
"Kristen has started to make weeks like this seem routine," said 12th-year Susquehanna women's basketball head coach Mark Hribar. "While her numbers were big last week, she'd be the first to tell you that she was disappointed that we didn't win the game at Elizabethtown. She's certainly pleased by what she accomplishes, but she's really driven this season to help our team win a championship."
Also an Academic All-American candidate as a psychology major, she is the daughter of Richard and Ann Venne of Shillington.
Susquehanna is now 4-2 overall, 2-1 and tied for third in the MAC Commonwealth League. The Crusaders close out their first semester play this Saturday with a 2 p.m. non-league game at 5-1 Western Maryland.
