A Record-Setting Performance
Hershey's Murray, Penn Manor's Badorf Break Records, Help Team Place Fifth at MACs
SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) - Susquehanna University sophomore Charlotte Murray of Hummelstown (Hershey High School) broke two of her own individual school records and was part of a record-setting relay at last weekend's Middle Atlantic Conference Swimming Championships at Widener University. Freshman Michelle Badorf of Lancaster (Penn Manor H.S.) also broke school records in both the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard freestyle at the event, also swimming the fastest leg on that rcord-setting relay. The duo helped their team place fifth out of 11 teams to equal its best finish ever at the conference championships. They also were key figures as the squad equaled its best dual meet finish since 1990-91 as it went 7-4 under 20th-year head coach Ged Schweikert.
Murray broke her own school records in both the 1,650-yard freestyle and 500-freestyle, placing second and third in the conference in each respectively. She swam 18:43.80 in the 1,650 (Old Record: 18:51.96, 1998) and 5:24.98 in the 500 (Old Record: 5:30.40, 1998). She also swam the third leg in Susquehanna's record-setting 800-yard freestyle relay team, which posted a time of 8:19.45 (Old Record: 8:31.26, 1989) while placing fourth. Murray also finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.40).
"Charlotte knew exactly what she wanted to do. She is extremely hard working and it paid off" said Schweikert. "She also broke the 1,000-yard freestyle record in her split in her 1,650-yard freestyle race with a time of 11:13.98, which was seven seconds faster than the old record."
A biology major, Murray is the daughter of Dr. Bosseau and Janette Murray of Hummelstown.
Badorf broke the 200-free record with a time of 2:00.92 (Old Record: 2:02.81, 1988) as she finished second in the conference, breaking the 200-backstroke mark while placing third at 2:15.10 (Old Record: 2:17.71, Karen Danskin, 1994). She also swam the lead-off leg of the 800-free relay team, and was third in the 100-back with the team's season best time of 1:03.78 - second-fastest in school history (Record: 1:03.53, Jenn Elkins, 1995).
"Michelle had a phenomenal meet," said Schweikert. "Everytime she got into the pool, she swam faster than she ever had before."
A biology major, Badorf is the daughter of John and Patricia Badorf of Lancaster.
