TOWSON, Md. — Senior midfielder Jenelle Anthony (Saylorsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) scored off an assist from junior back Courtney Salsman (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) in the 74th minute to give visiting Susquehanna University its second straight Landmark Conference win, 1–0 over Goucher College, on Oct. 4. The win put the Crusaders in first place in the conference.

In a tight contest, Susquehanna (4–7, 2–0 Landmark) freshman Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca) was vital in making four saves for her second shutout of 2008. The Goucher (3–8, 0–2 Landmark) goalkeeper made five saves before allowing the Anthony goal just 3 minutes, 55 seconds into the extra period.

Shots were close with SU taking seven to the Gophers’ six, but the Crusaders held a 19–5 advantage in penalty corners.

Sept. 27: Susquehanna 1, Scranton 0 Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. — Freshman forward Anna Spisak (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) scored on a redirect of a shot from freshman back Laurel Monaghan (East Fallowfield, Pa./Coatesville Area) to help visiting Susquehanna University to a 1–0 Landmark Conference victory over The University of Scranton at Fitzpatrick Field on Sept. 27.

Following a scoreless first half, Susquehanna (3–7, 1–0 Landmark) earned a penalty corner in the 49th minute. Monaghan fired a shot from the top of the circle before Spisak converted the play for the game’s only goal.

Five minutes earlier, freshman Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca) made a successful save on a penalty stroke taken by Scranton (5–5, 0–1 Landmark). A defensive save by sophomore back Julia Amendola (Mountain Top, Pa./Bishop Hoban) on the goal line led to the penalty stroke.

Ferguson finished with four saves.

Sept. 24: Susquehanna 4, Washington & Jefferson 3 (OT) Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Sophomore back Julia Amendola (Mountaintop, Pa./Bishop Hoban) scored one goal and assisted on two others, including the game-winner by sophomore midfielder Rebecca Entwistle (Farmingdale, N.J./Wall) 3 minutes, 55 seconds into overtime, to push Susquehanna University past visiting Washington & Jefferson College at Sassafras Fields on Sept. 24.

Freshman back Laurel Monaghan (East Fallowfield, Pa./Coatesville Area) scored the game's first goal for Susquehanna (2–7 overall) off a penalty corner 6:54 into the first half. Senior midfielders Kristen Epting (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg Area) and Jenelle Anthony (Saylorsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) assisted.

Washington & Jefferson (5-2 overall) answered with a score in the 14th minute when a Presidents forward deflected a long pass past the Crusaders' freshman goalkeeper Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca).

In what would be the theme of the game, the scoring continued to go back-and-forth from there. Epting put Susquehanna back on top off Amendola's assist. The play was almost a carbon copy of the W & J goal less than 4:30 earlier, as Epting deflected Amendola's long pass past the Presidents' goalkeeper. The score was 2–1 at halftime.

W & J scored the first goal of the second half unassisted in the 52nd minute. A Presidents player fought for a rebound in front of the Susquehanna cage before getting enough of a shot off to tie the game at 2–2.

Another penalty corner led to a Crusaders goal less than 5:00 later as Amendola finished off a Monaghan assist.

W & J got the equalizer just 1:08 after Amendola's goal though when a player freed herself from the Susquehanna defense for another unassisted goal.

Ferguson made three saves the rest of the way, and the Presidents' keeper made one to keep the game tied at 3–3 heading into the overtime period. Ferguson finished with eight total saves; the W & J goalie had three.

The Crusaders had lost their six previous games by just one goal each time, including three that were decided past regulation, but they finally broke through against the Presidents. Entwistle beat the W & J goalie off the Amendola assist to send the SU sidelines onto the field for a raucous celebration.

W & J actually outshot Susquehanna, 16–10, but the Crusaders held a pivotal edge in penalty corners, 11–9.

Sept. 21: Susquehanna 0, Stevens Tech 1 Box Score

HOBOKEN, N.J. — Shots on goal were even at 3–3, but one of those shots found the back of the cage for Stevens Institute of Technology as the Ducks blanked the visitors from Susquehanna University, 1–0, at De Baun Athletic Complex on Sept. 21.

Susquehanna (1–7 overall) had a chance for the game's first goal on a penalty stroke just 2 minutes, 11 seconds into the first half. Stevens Tech (8–2 overall) substituted in their backup goalkeeper for just that occasion, and she made the important save.

The Ducks scored the game's only goal in the 29th minute when their forward came in from the right side to beat Crusaders freshman goalkeeper Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca) on a one-on-one.

Ferguson kept the Crusaders in the game despite being outshot, 11–5. She and Stevens Tech's starting goalie both made two saves.

Sept. 20: Susquehanna 2, #14 Montclair State 3 Box Score
MONTCLAIR, N.J. — Freshman Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca) made eight saves, including five in the second half, but visiting Susquehanna University fell, 3–2, to nationally ranked No. 14 Montclair State at Sprague Field on Sept. 20.

Susquehanna (1–6 overall) gave the Red Hawks (7–0 overall) all that they could handle. The Crusaders were outshot, 15–9, but held an 8–7 advantage in penalty corners.

Montclair State opened the scoring with a penalty-stroke goal in the 24th minute. Susquehanna answered just 2 minutes, 41 seconds later with a goal by freshman forward Anna Spisak (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs). Spisak deflected a shot from sophomore back Julia Amendola (Mountaintop, Pa./Bishop Hoban) over the Monarchs' goalkeeper. Amendola was credited with an assist on the play. The score was 1–1 at halftime.

Montclair State scored the next two goals. The first of those came in the 56th minute, and the eventual game-winner came off off a penalty corner in the 60th.

With time expired but play continuing on a penalty corner for the Crusaders, freshman back Laurel Monaghan (East Fallowfield, Pa./Coatesville Area) took a feed from senior midfielder Jenelle Anthony (Saylorsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) to beat the Montclair State goalie at exactly the 70-minute mark and provide the final margin.

Amendola made a defensive save in the 17th minute, and Montclair State had a goal disallowed on a high-stick call in the 23rd to put the game's outcome in doubt until the last few minutes.

Sept. 18: Susquehanna 2, York (Pa.) 3 Box Score
YORK, Pa. — Freshman forward Anna Spisak (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) tied the game in the 53rd minute, but the York College of Pennsylvania countered with a goal with just 5 minutes, 45 seconds left in the contest to escape with a 3–2 win over visiting Susquehanna University at Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center on Sept. 18.

Senior midfielder Kristen Epting (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) assisted on Spisak's goal, which finished the climb from a 2–0 deficit for Susquehanna (1–5 overall) after the first half.

York (4–3 overall) outshot the Crusaders, 13–2, in the first 35-minute period and took nine penalty corners to Susquehanna's two, but play evened out in the second with penalty corners square at 5–5 and Susquehanna outshooting the Spartans, 7–3.

York's game-winner wiped out Spisak's goal and a goal from Crusaders junior forward Andrea Fiori (West Trenton, N.J./Lawrenceville School). Fiori started the SU comeback with an unassisted goal in the 44th minute. She collected a loose ball in front of the Spartans cage just long enough to find the back of the net.

The Spartans scored the game's opening goal exactly 17 minutes into the first half off a penalty corner and made the score 2–0 in the 27th minute.

The York goalkeeper made three saves, while freshman Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca) made five for Susquehanna.

Sept. 12: Susquehanna 1, William Paterson 2 (OT) Box Score
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Freshman back Laurel Monaghan (East Fallowfield, Pa./Coatesville Area) scored off a penalty corner in the 60th minute to tie the game at 1–1, but Susquehanna University fell in overtime to visiting William Paterson University, 2–1, at Sassafras Fields on Sept. 12.

Senior midfielder Kristen Epting (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) and freshman midfielder Diana Mask (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) picked up assists for Susquehanna (1–4 overall), which lost for the third-straight time in a game decided past regulation. William Paterson (4–1 overall) was playing in its first overtime game this year.

The Pioneers scored first in the 29th minute off a breakaway. William Paterson held a 6–0 advantage in both shots and penalty corners in the first half.

The Crusaders had a golden opportunity to tie the game when they were awarded a penalty stroke in the 58th minute, but the Pioneers' goalkeeper made a spectacular save by diving to her right to get a stick on the shot and preserve the lead.

That save would prove to be crucial as Susquehanna tied the game just 2 minutes, 37 seconds later. William Paterson's keeper finished the game with three saves, while freshman Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca) made six saves for the Crusaders.

Play evened out a bit in the second half. William Paterson held only a 7–5 edge in shots during the latter 35-minute period and an 8–3 advantage in penalty corners.

Nevertheless, William Paterson scored off a 2-on-1 break with 5:02 remaining in the first overtime period to end the game.

Susquehanna took the lone penalty corner during overtime.

Sept. 7: Susquehanna 1, Alvernia 2 (OT) Box Score
READING, Pa. —Freshman Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca) made 10 saves, including three in overtime, but visiting Susquehanna University fell to Alvernia College, 2–1 in overtime, in a field hockey game on Sept. 7.

Alvernia (2–2 overall), improves to 2–1 in games decided past regulation. Susquehanna (1–3 overall) falls to 1–2 in such games.

Susquehanna's junior forward Andrea Fiori (West Trenton, N.J./Lawrenceville School) scored the game's first goal in the 22nd minute. Fiori collected a rebound in front of the Alvernia cage and beat the goalkeeper to the left side of the net for her first two points of the 2008 season. The goal was unassisted.

Ferguson was outstanding in keeping the visiting Crusaders ahead, 1–0 at halftime, despite being outshot, 13-3, in the first 35 minutes. (Both teams are nicknamed “Crusaders.”)

Alvernia scored in the 46th minute to force overtime and then netted the game-winner with just 1 minute, 11 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

This game was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m.

Sept. 3: Susquehanna 0, Wilkes 1 (PS) Box Score
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Freshman Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca) made 19 saves — the third-highest single-game total in program history — but Susquehanna University fell to visiting Wilkes University, 1–0 on penalty strokes, at Sassafras Fields on Sept. 3.

Wilkes (2–0 overall) won on strokes for the second time in a row. Susquehanna (1–2 overall) is now 1–1 in games decided by stroke-offs.

Ferguson was nothing short of fantastic in goal for the Crusaders. She got a little bit of help when sophomore back Julia Amendola (Mountaintop, Pa./Bishop Hoban) made a defensive save with 8 minutes, 3 seconds left in the first half, but Ferguson stood on her head the rest of the way to force two full overtime periods.

The Colonels' goalkeeper made seven saves, not including two stops in the stroke-off. The first two shooters for each team found the back of the net. Wilkes scored next, followed by two saves from the Wilkes goalie. The Colonels scored next to seal the shootout win by a score of 4–1.

Aug. 30: Susquehanna 1, Misericordia 3 Box Score

WHITEHALL, Pa. — Sophomore forward Caitlin Peterson (York, Pa./Central York) scored an unassisted goal, and freshman Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca) made two saves for Susquehanna University, but the Crusaders fell, 3–1, to Misericordia University at Whitehall High School on Aug. 30.

Three different players scored one goal each and three more added one assist each for Misericordia (1–1 overall). The Cougars' goalkeeper made one save. The Crusaders (1–1 overall) made three saves as a team, as sophomore Natasha Eisenhart (Gordon, Pa./Conrad Weiser) made a save in relief of Ferguson , who started the game and played the first 45 minutes, 47 seconds.

Misericordia held an 8–4 advantage in shots, but Susquehanna took seven penalty corners to the Cougars' four.

Aug. 29: Susquehanna 3, Muhlenberg 2 (PS) Box Score

WHITEHALL, Pa. — Susquehanna University came back from a 2-0 deficit with under seven minutes to play and posted a 2-1 advantage in penalty strokes to stage a dramatic 3-2 win against Muhlenberg College in Muhlenberg’s field hockey Mule Classic at Whitehall High School on Aug. 29.

Senior midfielder Jenelle Anthony (Saylorsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) scored first for Susquehanna (1-0 overall) during the penalty stroke-off, followed by a save from freshman goalkeeper Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca). Muhlenberg (0-1 overall) scored on the next exchange to even the stroke tallies at one each. Senior forward Maggie Kramer (Royersford, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored next though, and Ferguson made three straight saves to ice the stroke-off at 2-1.

Despite Susquehanna outshooting the Mules, 6-2, in the first half, the game was scoreless heading into the second frame. Muhlenberg scored one minute, six seconds into the second half to take the first lead, then followed that with a score with 13:57 remaining to go ahead, 2-0.

Sophomore midfielder Rebecca Entwistle (Farmingdale, N.J./Wall) tipped in an assist from senior midfielder Kristen Epting (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) off a penalty corner with 11:59 remaining to halve the lead, and sophomore back Julia Amendola (Mountain Top, Pa./Bishop Hoban) tipped in an assist from junior back Courtney Salsman (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) just two-and-a-half minutes later to tie it.

Neither team could score in either of the two 15-minute overtime periods, which set the stage for Ferguson’s heroics in the stroke-off. Ferguson made six of her seven saves during the overtime periods, including four in the second extra frame.
