Crusaders finish fourth at Landmarks Meet Results

KINGS POINT, N.Y.—The Susquehanna women finished their season by placing fourth at the Landmark Conference Championships.

One individual school record and two school relay records fell throughout the three-day championship meet.

Freshman Lindsey Jankiewicz (Easton, Pa./Freedom) clocked a 1:02.52 in her 100 backstroke leg of the 400 medley relay, eclipsing the former mark of 1:03.28 set by freshman Christie Savard (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) earlier this season. Jankiewicz went on to take second in the 100 backstroke with a 1:03.22 time in finals. Jankiewicz also placed fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:20.98).

The 400 medley relay quartet of Jankiewicz , senior Lindsey Moretti (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond) , freshman Sarah Springer (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) and sophomore Cristina Los (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) took down the school record in the 400 medley relay, clocking a fourth-place time of 4:17.23. The former school record of 4:18.45 was set back in 2003.

Jankiewicz , Moretti , sophomore Melissa Gilpin (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) and senior Julie Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) teamed up in the 200 medley relay, breaking the 1996 school record of 1:57.97 with a third-place time of 1:56.10.

The women also fared well in the other relays.

The 200 freestyle relay of Moretti , junior Amanda Kane (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) , sophomore Catherine Harris (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and Yingling came in fourth place with a time of 1:45.83.

Freshman Lauren Snyder (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) , Gilpin , Kane and Yingling nearly missed Catholic for second in the 800 freestyle relay, settling for third with an 8:28.57 time.

Snyder , Kane , Yingling and Los closed out the meet by placing fourth in the 400 freestyle relay, stopping the clock at 3:55.01.

Most of the women shaved off tons of time, creating a strong showing deep into the consolation final heats.

Moretti racked up solid points in the breaststroke events. She swam a 1:12.78 100 breaststroke, placing seventh overall, and a sixth-place 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:37.14.

Senior Abby Letterese (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) swam the fastest conference championship meet of her four-year career, corralling two times that stood as her fastest as a Crusader. She put up a fifth-place effort in the 200 individual medley (2:24.20), a second-place showing in the 400 individual medley (5:02.06) and an eighth-place performance in the 200 breaststroke (2:38.06).

Snyder debuted in her first collegiate championship meet, placing in the top six in two of her three events. She took eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:35.44), sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:05.70) and third in the 200 backstroke (2:19.73).

Gilpin struck big in her events, placing sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:36.38), ninth in the 100 butterfly (1:06.46) and second in the 200 butterfly (2:25.29).

Senior Kelly Leighton (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) helped lead the distance corps, taking 10th in the 500 freestyle (5:37.91) and fourth in the 1650 freestyle (19:11.20).

Yingling clocked personal-best times in each event she swam over the weekend. She took 12th in the 50 freestyle with a 26.63, eighth in the 200 freestyle in 2:06.24 and 11th in the 100 freestyle with a 59.24.

Junior Amy Thiele (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) scored points in each of her three individual events. Thiele clocked a 2:29.88 200 individual medley for 10th place, a 5:24.45 400 individual medley for sixth place and a 2:38.10 200 butterfly for 11th place.

Sophomore Hayley Keenan (Pikesville, Md./Liberty) placed in each of the backstroke events. She took seventh in the 100 backstroke with a 1:04.27 time and seventh in the 200 backstroke with a 2:20.69.

Senior Samantha Meddaugh (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert) placed in one individual event, taking fifth in the 1650 freestyle in 19:31.85.

Springer reached the evening swim in two individual events, taking ninth in the 200 butterfly (2:37.45) and 10th in the 100 backstroke (1:06.70).

Los took home two top-12 finishes, placing 11th in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:15.66 and 12th in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:48.05.

Harris placed in the top 12 in one event, placing 12th in the 100 butterfly (1:07.90).

Susquehanna did not field any divers in the diving competition.

January 26: Crusaders down McDaniel for first eight-win season since 1990 Meet Results

SELINSGROVE, PA — The plethora of senior women saw their efforts come to fruition, as 8-4 (4-1) Susquehanna downed McDaniel College 111.5-83.5 on senior day in front of a large crowd at the James W. Garrett Sports Complex natatorium.

The Crusaders hadn't won eight meets in a season since 1989-90. Their .667 winning percentage this year ranks second all time among women's swimming teams to the 1999-2000 squad that went 7-3, thus compiling a .700 winning percentage.

Six senior women processed behind the starting block area with their parents at the beginning of the meet to commemorate their years of service on the Crusader team. The seniors included Abby Letterese (Morristown, N.J./Morristown), Lindsey Moretti (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond), Samantha Meddaugh (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert), Julie Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg), Kelly Leighton (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) and Nicole Scheer (Pullman, Wash./Pullman).

Freshman Lauren Snyder (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley ) had a career day in the distance events, winning both in season-best times. She posted an 11:37.03 in the 1000 freestyle before going a 5:38.66 in the 500 freestyle.

Sophomore Catherine Harris (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) took the top spot in the 50 freestyle, touching first in 27.43.

Letterese brought home the win in the 200 individual medley with a 2:29.96 clocking.

Freshman Lindsey Jankiewicz (Easton , Pa./Freedom) swam the 200 backstroke for the first time in her career and won with a 2:24.33.

Moretti, swimming in exhibition at the end of the meet, dominated the 200 breaststroke field, winning in 2:37.55.

The Crusader 400 medley relay contingent of Jankiewicz, Moretti, sophomore Melissa Gilpin (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) and Yingling put together a 4:25.65 victory for the orange and maroon as well.

A number of Crusaders placed second in their respective events. Leighton placed second in the 1000 freestyle (11:37.15), freshman Sarah Springer (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) earned a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle (27.47), junior Amy Thiele (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) took second in the 200 individual medley (2:32.49), Yingling placed second in the 100 freestyle (1:00.28), sophomore Hayley Keenan (Pikesville, Md./Liberty) got second in the 200 backstroke (2:26.50) and Letterese took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:45.36).

Susquehanna will prepare in the upcoming weeks for the Landmark Conference Championships in Kings Point , N.Y. Female swimmers from Susquehanna as well as Drew University, Juniata College, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the University of Scranton, the Catholic University of America and Goucher College will compete in an open-qualifying championship meet. With the host site having six lanes, the top 12 finishers in each event will score points. All events will have a preliminary qualifying session followed by a final session at night with the exception of the 1650 freestyle. The 1650 will be a timed final event swum on the meet's final day.

 

January 23: Crusaders end Landmark regular season with a win over Juniata Meet Results

SELINSGROVE, PA-- The Susquehanna women won their final Landmark contest 73-60 against the Eagles of Juniata College, bringing their record to 7-4 (4-1).

Freshman Lauren Snyder (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) corralled two wins, including one in the 200 freestyle (2:08.73) and another in the 500 freestyle where she touched out senior Kelly Leighton (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) with a 5:41.06 time. Leighton settled for second with a 5:41.26.

Leighton also won the 1000 freestyle with an 11:44.49 clocking.

Susquehanna reigned supreme in the individual events, placing first in eight of the nine races.

Freshman Melissa Weeks (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) took top honors in the 400 individual medley with a 5:27.62.

Sophomore Melissa Gilpin (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) came out on top in the 200 butterfly, winning in 2:33.28.

Senior Julie Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) emerged victorious in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall in 1:00.93.

Freshman Sarah Springer (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) took the 200 backstroke by two seconds, snagging the win in 2:26.58.

Senior Lindsey Moretti (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond) concluded the Crusader domination of the individual events with a 2:40.64 showing in the 200 breaststroke.

The Crusaders pulled a one-two-three finish in the 400 medley relay, with the winning contingent of freshman Lindsey Jankiewicz (Easton, Pa./Freedom), Moretti, Springer and Yingling going 4:25.88.

Second-place finishes came from junior Amanda Kane (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) in the 200 freestyle (2:11.52), sophomore Catherine Harris (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) in the 50 freestyle (27.36), sophomore Hayley Keenan (Pikesville, Md./Liberty) in the 200 backstroke (2:28.62) and sophomore Cristina Los (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) in the 200 breaststroke (2:50.01).

Susquehanna hosts McDaniel (1-5) Saturday in its season finale.

 

January 19: Crusaders drop tough one to Albright Meet Results

READING , PA — The Crusader women fell to Albright College by a 118-81 final in a non-conference matchup against Albright College, the defending Middle Atlantic Conference champions.

Freshman Lindsey Jankiewicz (Easton, Pa./Freedom) shined in her first showing as a Crusader swimmer. Jankiewicz led off the third-place Crusader medley relay with a blazing 28.78 backstroke that served as the event's fastest split by more than a second. She nearly eclipsed a school record set by fellow freshman teammate Christie Savard (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) with a 1:03.36 win in the 100 backstroke. Savard swam the school-record time of 1:03.28 against Goucher in the first meet of the season.

Senior Lindsey Moretti (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond) posted her best time as a Crusader in the 100 breaststroke with a first-place time of 1:11.84.

The second-place 200 medley relay of sophomore Hayley Keenan (Pikesville, Pa./Liberty), Moretti, freshman Sarah Springer and senior Julie Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) came within a second (1:58.96) of the Crusader school record in the event. Karen Danskin, Tammy Shutters, Alicia Turzanski and Heather Sheldon still hold the gold standard of 1:57.97.

The loss dropped the Crusaders to 6-4 (3-1) on the season.

Susquehanna takes on Juniata College (0-4) in its final Landmark Conference contest of the season Wednesday night.

 

January 12: Susquehanna takes two to improve to 6-3 overall Meet Results

SELINSGROVE, PA—The Crusader women easily defeated both Drew and King’s by respective scores of 53-40 and 57-30, extending their record to 6-3 (3-1).

Senior Kelly Leighton (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) posted two lifetime-best times in her two individual event victories. She touched first in the 1000 freestyle, clocking an 11:38.04 and also picked up first in the 500 freestyle as well (5:41.31).

Freshman Lauren Snyder (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) paced the 200 freestyle field, earning a first-place time of 2:06.32.

Senior Abby Letterese (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) mounted a comeback in the breaststroke leg of her 200 individual medley and finished first with a 2:30.30.

Sophomore Melissa Gilpin (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) scored first-place points in the 100 butterfly, taking the event in 1:07.60.

Senior Julie Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) cracked the one-minute barrier in her first-place 100 freestyle swim, slamming the touchpad at 59.71.

Sophomore transfer Hayley Keenan (Pikesville, Md./Liberty) won a hard-fought race in the 100 backstroke, winning in 1:05.60.

Senior Lindsey Moretti (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond) easily cranked out a first-place 100 breaststroke performance, closing out the individual event wins with a 1:14.44 swim.

Susquehanna placed first in both of the relay events. The 200 medley relay consisting of Keenan, Moretti, freshman Sarah Springer (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) and Yingling clocked a 2:00.85 while the 200 freestyle relay quartet of Gilpin, sophomore Catherine Harris (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), junior Amanda Kane (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) and Yingling claimed the top spot with a 1:51.68.

Other strong showings came from senior Samantha Meddaugh (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert), Kane, Springer, Snyder and sophomore Cristina Los (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury).

The Crusaders travel to Albright College next weekend to take on the defending Middle Atlantic Conference champions in the second-to-last non-conference tilt of the season.

 

December 8: Susquehanna edges Elizabethtown 112-93 Meet Results

SELINSGROVE, Pa. —The Crusader women found themselves on the winning end of another thriller, defeating the non-conference Elizabethtown College Blue Jays by a 112-93 score.

With the meet at 99-89, Susquehanna needed to take at least a second-place finish in the final event to seal the win. The grouping of freshman Sarah Springer (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg), sophomore Catherine Harris (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), sophomore Melissa Gilpin (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) and senior Julie Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) exceeded the expectations set before them and won the 200 freestyle relay in a 1:48.94 time.

Freshman Lauren Snyder (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) led the charge with two individual event wins. She nosed out the competition in the 200 freestyle (2:07.60) and put up an event-best 5:44.43 in the 500 freestyle.

Senior Kelly Leighton (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) continued her assault on the distance freestyle events, clocking a first-place 11:52.07 in the 1000 freestyle. Leighton also placed second in the 500 freestyle (5:46.97).

Gilpin mustered up a 1:06.26 effort in the 100 butterfly, capturing the race in a 1:06.26 time.

Sophomore transfer Hayley Keenan (Pikesville, Md./Liberty) unleashed a 1:05.27 100 backstroke and won her first-ever event as a Crusader.

Other strong performances came from freshman Christie Savard (Berwyn , Pa./Conestoga) in the 200 individual medley (2:24.04), Springer in the 100 butterfly (1:06.40) and senior Lindsey Moretti (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond) in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.23) and 50 freestyle (27.26).

 

December 1: Crusaders fall to Scranton in first Landmark loss Meet Results

SCRANTON , PA —Freshman Christie Savard (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) won the Crusaders' (3-3, 2-1) only event against Landmark-leading Scranton as Susquehanna dropped a 112-88 decision to the Royals.

Savard touched out Scranton's Lauren Wieland in the 200 backstroke with a 2:16.08 time. She nearly missed the school record of 2:15.10 set by Michelle Badorf in 1999.

Other strong performances came from sophomore Melissa Gilpin (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) in the 200 butterfly, sophomore Cristina Los (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) in the 100 free and senior Lindsey Moretti in the 200 breaststroke (2:39.60).

The Crusaders placed second in both relays. Susquehanna's 400 medley relay contingent of Savard, Moretti, freshman Sarah Springer (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) and senior Julie Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) clocked a 4:23.82, while the 400 freestyle relay quartet of freshman Lauren Snyder (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley), Springer, Gilpin and Catherine Harris (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) touched in 4:05.60.

 

November 17: Crusaders upset Catholic 107-98, remain undefeated in the Landmark

SELINSGROVE, Pa.—Approaching the wall to thunderous applause from all throughout the natatorium at the Garrett Sports Complex, the freestyle relay grouping of freshman Sarah Springer (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg), sophomore Catherine Harris (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), junior Amanda Kane (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) and freshman Christie Savard (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) did the seemingly impossible: it defeated a Cardinal team that had an undefeated record and appeared to be the clear-cut favorite to be the second-best team in the Landmark behind Scranton.

The meet's score was tied at 94 going into the final event of the afternoon, and the winner of that event would garner a share of the conference lead with Scranton.

Springer set the tone for the race early, and the rest of the women followed as the Crusaders emerged victorious with a 1:47.60 win.

The win in the 200 freestyle relay locked the final score in at 107-98 in favor of Susquehanna.

Susquehanna exploited Catholic's distance group as no Crusader swimmer lost either the 1000 or the 500.

Senior Kelly Leighton (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Wilkes-Barre) paced the 1000 field, winning the event in an 11:52.73 time. Senior Samantha Meddaugh (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert) placed right behind Leighton, swimming a 12:02.47.

Freshman Lauren Snyder (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) battled two persistant Cardinals in the 200 freestyle and eventually won the race with a 2:07.61 time.

Savard, who set her sights at erasing Amy Clark's 2:18.95 200 IM record, fell just short of both the record and the win. She settled for a second-place time of 2:20.62, which stands as the fourth-best time in program history.

Springer lit up the pool with a personal-best 1:07.30 100 backstroke and notched another crucial Crusader win in the process.

Snyder pulled out a 5:45.24 500 freestyle win, and Leighton finished second with a 5:47.61. Meddaugh headed into her final 50 two second behind the Catholic swimmer who appeared to have third place locked up. Meddaugh stormed into the wall hard and stole away the third-place honor in the process (5:56.90).

Senior Lindsey Moretti (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond) posted a season-best time in the 100 breaststroke, as she took the event in a 1:13.02 time.

 

November 13: Crusaders fall short against Lycoming Meet Results

WILLIAMSPORT , Pa.—Susquehanna dropped a tough non-conference meet against the Warriors of Lycoming College on Tuesday night by a 115.5-89.5 final.

Freshman Christie Savard (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) put up individual event wins in both the 200 freestyle (2:04.48) and the 100 backstroke (1:03.78). Savard was the only Crusader double event winner of the evening.

The 200 medley relay quartet of Savard, senior Lindsey Moretti (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond), freshman Sarah Springer (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) and freshman Lauren Snyder (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) lost a nail biter in the meet's first event, touching second in a 1:59.51 time.

Snyder turned out a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle, outlasting Lycoming's Milvana Ban with a 5:41.67 performance. Snyder also took second in the 200 freestyle (2:08.71).

Other strong Crusader performances included a second-place finish by senior Kelly Leighton (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) in the 1000 freestyle (11:47.69), a second-place finish by sophomore Catherine Harris (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) in the 50 freestyle (26.84), a third-place finish by junior Amanda Kane (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) in the 200 freestyle (2:10.17) and a second-place finish by Moretti in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.37).

 

November 10: Savard notches one more record as Crusaders down Dutchmen Meet Results

Susquehanna improved its record to 2-1 on the season as the Crusaders easily cruised past non-conference Lebanon Valley in a 96-79 victory.

The Crusaders went 11 for 11 in event wins for the first time this season.

Freshman Christie Savard (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) took down the remaining Jenn Roth record when she clobbered the former 400 IM standard with a 4:55.76 time. Roth swam the former record of 5:02.19 at the 2005 Middle Atlantic Conference Championship meet.

Senior Julie Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) captured both sprints, earning event-best times in both the 50 (27.58) and 100 (1:01.43) freestyle events.

Freshman Lauren Snyder (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) rounded out the double event winners for the Crusaders, taking both middle distance events. She set the pace in both the 200 (2:09.04) and 500 (5:46.91) freestyle events.

Senior Kelly Leighton (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) swam the 1000 freestyle for the second day in a row and captured the event in an 11:55.90 time.

Each of the stroke events had a one-event winner donning the orange and maroon. Sophomore Catherine Harris (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) took first in the 100 butterfly (1:11.27), freshman Sarah Springer (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) posted a solid first-place performance in the100 backstroke (1:07.88) and senior Lindsey Moretti (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond) continued to persist through her injury woes with a 100 breaststroke win (1:14.39).

 

November 9: Savard grabs two more records in win Meet Results

CARLISLE , PA —Freshman Christie Savard (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) won the only individual event she swam in record time as the Crusaders fell to non-conference Dickinson College by a score of 122-77.

Savard led off the Crusader 400 medley relay contingent of senior Lindsey Moretti (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond), freshman Sarah Springer (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) and senior Julie Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) with a school-record time in the 100 backstroke. Her 1:03.10 time reset the record she set two weeks ago against Goucher College (1:03.28). The medley relay team took second with a 4:26.31 time.

Savard also won the 200 butterfly in a school-record time of 2:21.58. Her time eclipsed the former mark of 2:24.15 set by Jenn Roth in 2005.

Senior Abby Letterese (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) accounted for the only other Susquehanna win with a 2:43.21 time in the 200 breaststroke.

Other strong showings included second-place finishes by Yingling in the 50 freestyle (27.31), Springer in the 200 IM (2:32.77) and Lauren Snyder (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley ) in the 200 backstroke (2:22.37).

The Crusaders turned around the next day and won their Family Weekend matchup with Lebanon Valley, 96-79. Savard set one more record, this time in the 400 IM with a time of 4:55:76.

 

October 27: Freshmen Savard and Snyder win two, outlast Landmark foe Goucher 124-81 Meet Results

BALTIMORE, MD — Freshman Christie Savard's (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) two wins and one school record helped lead the Susquehanna University Crusaders to a 124-81 victory against the Gophers of Goucher College in the inaugural Landmark Conference swim meet.

Savard doubled up on the Gophers with two first-place finishes, including a record-breaking swim in the 100 backstroke. Savard touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle, clocking 2:06.53 and reset the former 100 backstroke standard of 1:03.53 with a time of 1:03.28. Jenn Elkins set the former standard back in 1995.

Freshman Lauren Snyder (Leesport, Pa./ Schuylkill Valley) also won two events, tying teammate senior Abby Letterese (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) for first place in the 200 individual medley (2:26.78) and edging out Goucher's Sarah Keifer in the 500 freestyle (5:43.41).

Susquehanna closed out the meet with a one-two finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:52.56). The winning contingent included freshman Sarah Springer (Sykesville, Md. /Glenelg), senior Samantha Meddaugh (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert), junior Amanda Brooker (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) and sophomore Erica Picatagi (Brick, N.J./Brick).

Senior Lindsey Moretti (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond) accounted for the other Susquehanna win, taking first in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.01).

Goucher's Sara Sutherland won two individual events for the Gophers. She captured the 50 freestyle in a 27.30 and the 100 butterfly in a 1:04.83 time.
