Why SU? university options Applying to SU

“What nations don’t know can hurt them,” according to the Commission on the Abraham Lincoln Study Abroad Fellowship Program. “The stakes involved in study abroad are that simple, that straightforward, and that important. For their own future and that of the nation, college graduates today must be internationally competent.” The commission’s Global Competence and National Needs report sites national security and economic competitiveness in a global economy among the national interests served by study abroad, and calls on the nation to take steps that will result in 1 million undergraduates studying abroad by 2016. Congress has taken heed, proposing a bill that would establish study abroad as the norm for undergraduate students.
Susquehanna is on the cusp of this movement, having developed a new central curriculum unique to higher education in that it will require all students to participate in a cross-cultural experience and complete a reflective course that helps them process the experience. The new central curriculum and its cross-cultural experience take effect optionally for incoming students this fall, with full implementation expected in fall 2008.
In the meantime, Susquehanna continues to enhance its rich list of studyabroad opportunities. This spring, Susquehanna entered into a student exchange agreement with the University of Macau, China, which will allow up to 10 SU students to study there each year. With 44 exchange agreements around the world and 20 percent of its student population consisting of residents of mainland China, the University of Macau will offer SU students a truly intercultural experience and insight into the vital Asian marketplace. The second opportunity was made possible through The Eric Stein Fund for International Experience. Established in 2006 by the late Eric Stein, a 1969 graduate, this $1 million endowment provides students studying in the Sigmund Weis School of Business with travel and living expenses, as well as modest stipends to support their summer internship experiences abroad. To date, six students have been awarded this competitive scholarship and performed internships at companies in the United Kingdom, including Dow Jones and CNBC.
