Crocodiles & Kangaroos & Koalas, Oh My!
Imagine camping along a mangrove-lined river with crocodiles on the other side, or learning about spear-hunting from an Aborigine. Imagine that attending class involves grabbing a snorkel and climbing into a motorboat driven by a man you like to call Captain Jack. For me, this was the fall semester, and Australia was my classroom. I was one of 15 students who left behind life as usual to experience tropical Queensland’s rainforests, coral reefs, and Aboriginal cultures through the School for International Training’s Natural and Cultural Ecology program. I snorkeled, explored rainforests, and camped with Aborigines. During an independent research project I studied fairy penguins in the south of the continent. Throughout my adventures, I met wonderful people and experienced the environment of Australia as I never could have otherwise.
I was able to do all this while paying only normal tuition, room and board, and travel costs. Susquehanna even allowed me to keep my financial aid, and I received credit for the program which counted towards my major in earth and environmental sciences. About 35 percent of Susquehanna juniors study abroad. They study businessin London, Spanish in Argentina, and environmental science in Australia. They go to Celtic dances in Edinburgh and eat gelato in Rome. SU students studied in 11 countries last semester alone. Although the most popular destinations are Australia, England, and Spain, students are increasingly choosing untraditional locations like Japan, Senegal, Ecuador, and Greece. My fellow students and I have been able to explore the world; thanks to Susquehanna’s flexibility, the majority of us can study abroad and still graduate on time. I encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities as well. Remember, college is the time to experience new things! — Erin Markel ‘07, Edgewood, Md.
