A Case in Pointe

Dance Corp

Mesmerized by the ballet’s elegance and grace, Heather Warneke’s childhood was complete with annual trips to the American Ballet Company’s The Nutcracker. It was during these performances that she felt inspired to become a dancer. “I fell in love with the beauty of dance. Dance is a living art, and I wanted to become a part of it,” says Warneke, a junior broadcasting major and native of Mount Pocono, Pa.

Today, Warnecke is an experienced dancer of 12 years and aspires to one day become a Radio City Rockette. She works toward that goal by serving as president of the Susquehanna University Dance Corps. A student-run organization dedicated to all styles of dance, the corps is open to all students.

In addition to sponsoring an annual showcase in which dancers choreograph and perform several numbers, the dance corps offers year-round dance classes every weeknight. An offshoot of the dance corps, the Susquehanna Dance Team selects up to 16 dancers to perform at every home basketball game. Team member Elizabeth Rhoads, a sophomore public relations major from Lock Haven, Pa., is glad she can continue her dance career at Susquehanna.

“The dance team is great because it includes students coming from all different dance backgrounds. We learn a lot about each of our previous experiences, which helps us to develop into a better team,” Rhoads says. “Dancing has always been my passion,” Warneke adds, “I am thankful to have found 43 ladies that share my passion. Many of my good friends are SU Dance Corps members, and dancing has brought us together.”
