Faculty Q & A
Leann Mischel
Assistant Professor of Management
Director, Leadership Institute for Entrepreneurship
What sort of student typically chooses to study entrepreneurship? Do you have to be a business major?
LM: Students declaring an entrepreneurship emphasis do not have to be business majors. In fact, we encourage students from across the disciplines to take the classes. Ideas coming from students from diverse fields really broaden the topics we are able to cover.
Are there extracurricular activities in which you encourage your students to take part?
LM: Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) is a wonderful organization on campus that gives students the chance to participate in some really great activities. Although SIFE is not for profit, the projects they engage in give students a good idea about the many aspects of running a business.
What kind of feedback do you receive from high school students who have attended Susquehanna’s Leadership Institute For Entrepreneurship (LIFE) summer workshop?
LM: Overwhelmingly, students who have attended the LIFE workshop say it is the best camp they have ever attended. Many of these students have gone to other competitive camps across the country and they still give ours the highest scores. They make some great friends while attending, get a good taste of what college life is like, and learn a good deal about entrepreneurship, running a company, and leadership.
You enjoyed success in the business world before coming to Susquehanna University. What made you want to teach young people how to become successful entrepreneurs?
LM: Our students are the future of our economy. If we want the U.S. to remain competitive in world trade, we need to continue to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit in our students. I love to see their energy and learn of their creative and insightful ideas. It is my passion to help them successfully pursue their dreams.
