Code of Student Conduct

Interpretation of Regulations

6. The purpose of publishing student conduct regulations is to give students general notice of prohibited behavior. This code is not written with the specificity of a criminal statute.

Inherent Authority

7. The university reserves the right to take necessary and appropriate action to protect the safety, educational objectives and well-being of the campus community and its individual community members. Information that leads the Dean of Students or his designee to the determination that a student is at risk to harm him or herself or others will be considered when determining action. Such action may include pursuing disciplinary action through the Student Conduct System for any student or group of students’ violation of local, state or federal law—on or off-campus, including university-sponsored activities or study-away opportunities—that affects the university's educational interests. These include upholding the university’s initiatives to maintain positive town/gown relations and educate students on the importance of assuming the consequences of one’s own actions.

Disciplinary Action while Criminal Charges Are Pending

8. Students may be accountable both to civil authorities and to the university for acts that constitute violations of law and of this code. Disciplinary action at the university will normally proceed during the pendency of criminal proceedings and will not be subject to challenge on the ground that criminal charges involving the same incident have been dismissed or reduced.
