Prospective Students - Oh the Places You'll Go

Here are just some of the ways that students engage in Cross-Cultural Experiences through SU:

SU in Macau-  Students spend a full semester abroad with an SU faculty member at the University of Macau.  All classes are in English, but the culture of Macau is an interesting mix of Chinese and colonial Portuguese. To top it all off, participating in this program actually costs students less than staying on campus for the semester.

Hurricane Katrina relief- SU students are participating in the recovery of New Orleans.  This is a fairly short trip, but it can be a life-changing experience.  Students work hard and come back with a great sense of accomplishment and awareness of the special place that New Orleans occupies in American culture.

SWSB London- SU Business students frequently choose to study for a semester in London during their junior year.  The program is built right in to the Business School curriculum so it fits seamlessly into the SU experience.  SWSB London students also visit companies in several other European countries while abroad.

SUCASA- Chaplain Radecke takes a group of SU students to Costa Rica and Nicaragua for 2 weeks every winter break.  This is a service trip: SU students have been taking medicines, clothing, and used laptops with them to Central America for several years.  While on site, students help at an orphanage, tour local sites, and get a chance to use their Spanish if they can – but Spanish is not required to participate.

The Moon- Study Abroad on the Moon. After an intense zero-gravity training school you can take a shuttle to a land that is truly foreign. Learn about craters and explore outer space while co-existing with the native aliens on earth's one and only moon.*

Focus Australia- For 2 weeks every other June, students travel with 2 SU professors to Australia.  Students on this trip also take SU courses about Australia in Psychology and Biology before they leave, then they get to experience “on the ground” what they learned about in class. back to top

Traditional Study Abroad- SU students can study abroad around the world in many traditional study abroad programs.  If you have studied even a couple semesters of language, you might consider an immersion program, to see how fluent you can become.  If you would rather enroll directly into a British or Australian university, you can do that too.  One of the best options is to travel for a semester “off the beaten path.”  Students who travel to Senegal, Japan, India, or Chile return to campus with experiences and connections that can’t be matched elsewhere.

Summer Study Abroad- The possibilities are nearly endless.  You can finish your language requirement while studying abroad for 5-6 weeks in Québec, Mexico, Germany, Spain, Italy, China, or France – just to name a few.  Students who take the first two semesters of language at SU can easily complete the language requirement and the cross-cultural requirement the following summer, and still be home in time to have a summer break before classes start.

The North Pole- Study Abroad in the Arctic. Students can intern at Santa's Toy Shop and learn about the struggles of the elf unions as they work for equal rights in a new democracy. Optional classes include an in depth study of global warming, and how to care for flying reindeer.**

Service Learning-  There are many opportunities for Service Learning around the country and around the world.  Many of these experiences may offer the chance for you to get outside of your comfort zone a bit and learn in a cross-cultural environment.  We have some suggestions, and we’re interested in hearing your ideas as well.

Internships-  Some students will choose to do an internship in a cross-cultural setting.  If you propose and we accept it, it will fulfill the cross-cultural requirement.

Your own ideas-  What ideas do you have about experiencing cross-cultural learning?  The SU requirement is so flexible, that students may propose their own experience.  You might be going on a service trip with your church or some other organization.  Or you might be doing an internship in a part of the country or the world that is culturally distinct from your own background.  We want to hear what you have in mind.  All students will submit a proposal, and the cross-cultural experience does not necessarily have to be for college credit to count. back to top

*Susquehanna University cannot actually send you to the Moon. Sorry if we got you excited. We are sure, however, that you can find somewhere almost as exciting here on earth, among the human race. back to moon

**We cannot send students to the North Pole this year, or in the near future. Although we sympathize with the working conditions of the elves, the current political climate is too dangerous for students at this time. back to north pole
