ABOUT THE AUTHOR
of Caught in Irons
Michael Wayne Santos spent his formative years listening to his grandfather's sea stories, which he credits with instilling in him a lifelong fascination with maritime subjects. Santos received his B.A. in history from Stonehill College, and his Masters and Doctorate degrees from Carnegie -Mellon University. A professor of history at Lynchburg College, he serves as the founding director of the College's Center for the History and Culture of Central Virginia. This book grew from work that he did while on sabbatical as a Visiting Researcher at Mystic Seaport Museum in 1993.
