What Individuals Preparing Manuscripts Should Know

That in addition to suggestions or expectations provided either by Susquehanna University Press Editorial Committee or the reader's report form, the following should be kept in mind:

  1. We use the University of Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition, in copyediting all manuscripts. We strongly suggest that all authors consult the sections of the Manual dealing with notes and bibliographies. We very much prefer the use of endnotes (please do not use footnotes) for documentation of works in the humanities. (This it the first method of documentation ['Documentation 1'] discussed in chapter 15 of the Manual.) We will reluctantly accept the author date method, discussed in chapter 16. We cannot accept manuscripts prepared using the MLA style sheet.
  2. For spelling we use Webster's Third International Dictionary, unabridged, and the Tenth New Collegiate Dictionary, using the first spelling given for each word.
  3. All manuscript copy must be double-spaced, including all notes and backmatter.
  4. Please be sure that the manuscript includes a bibliography.

Translation of Foreign Language Quotes

We very strongly recommend that translations be provided for all foreign-language extracts. Generally, where the original language is retained (see below), the translation should immediately follow the original-language extract. Authors should refer to the editorial department of Associated University Presseses for detailed information on the styling of translations. Information may also be found in the Chicago Manual, sections 10.84-87.

The original-language quotations should be retained only when the original language itself is of scholarly significance. For example, in a work on Racine, quotations from Racine's plays should be given in the original French, followed by English translations. Quotations from critical works on the plays, taken from French sources, should be given in English translation only.

If the manuscript is finally approved, following these guidelines will greatly facilitate the copyediting and production stages handled by Associated University Presses.
