The Query Letter
The Press prefers that, prior to sending a manuscript, you print out and submit an "Author and Manuscript Inquiry" form. In lieu of the AMI, you may submit a standard query letter, in which you include the following information: whether or not the manuscript is a dissertation; whether or not any part of it has been previously published; whether or not it has been considered by any other Associated University Presses member; and whether or not you are prepared to submit the entire manuscript.
The letter should also summarize in a paragraph or two the argument or theme of the manuscript, list one or more scholars competent to evaluate it, and list any outstanding books on its subject. You should also include a separate curriculum vitae.
As a rule of thumb, a manuscript should not be fewer than 200 double-spaced pages in typescript, nor more than 500 pages. It must include endnotes and a bibliography. If accepted for publication, it must be formatted in the style prescribed by the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition.
The Press requests that, while it is actively considering a manuscript, the author not submit it to any other press.
The Press does not consider unrevised dissertations and recommends that the author review The Thesis and the Book, edited by Eleanor Harman and Ian Montagnes (The University of Toronto Press, 1976) prior to submitting a manuscript. Nor does the Press consider textbooks, fiction, poetry, or highly technical, mathematical, or scientific works.
