What Individuals Preparing Manuscripts Should Know-PDF-FORMS
Translation of Foreign Language Quotes
We very strongly recommend that translations be provided for all foreign-language extracts. Generally, where the original language is retained (see below), the translation should immediately follow the original-language extract. Authors should refer to the editorial department of Associated University Presseses for detailed information on the styling of translations. Information may also be found in the Chicago Manual, sections 10.84-87.
The original-language quotations should be retained only when the original language itself is of scholarly significance. For example, in a work on Racine, quotations from Racine's plays should be given in the original French, followed by English translations. Quotations from critical works on the plays, taken from French sources, should be given in English translation only.
If the manuscript is finally approved, following these guidelines will greatly facilitate the copyediting and production stages handled by Associated University Presses.
