The Crusader Swim Team

The swimming program at Susquehanna is committed to academic excellence and to providing an opportunity for its student-athletes to compete in a quality intercollegiate sports program. This philosophy, which  is consistent with that of the NCAA for all Division III schools, is best observed in the performance of our athletes in the classroom. Last fall, the women's team recorded a 3.27 GPA while the men's team recorded a 3.21 GPA. You are invited to examine the <News> link below to see for yourself how our athletes have distinguished themselves in the classroom over the course of the current academic year.

Since the program's first season in 1980 we have competed as a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC), a highly competitive Division III athletic organization. Over that span of time, the combined men's and women's teams have won more than 63% of their meets. This past season, one of our most successful ever, culminated with a third place finish for the men in the MAC Championships. In that meet they won four individual gold medals, set 4 new individual and 5 relay records. In the meet over 75% of their times were season bests while more than 61% were lifetime best times.  There were only three seniors on that team! In the same meet the women finished 7th, turning in over 86.5 % season and 62.2 % lifetime best times.

Beginning with the 2007-2008 academic year Susquehanna will leave the Middle Atlantic Conference and compete in a new NCAA Division III athletic association formed in December, 2006 by eight like-minded colleges and universities in the eastern United States. The members of the Landmark Conference are the Catholic University of America, of Washington, D.C.; Drew University of Madison, NJ; Goucher College of Baltimore, MD.; Juniata College of Huntingdon, PA; Moravian College of Bethlehem, PA.; Susquehanna University of Selinsgrove, PA.; the University of Scranton of Scranton, PA; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy of King’s Point, NY.

The most literal inspiration for the Landmark Conference’s name came from the many well-known physical landmarks of the Mid-Atlantic region encompassed by the conference. The name also reflects the significance of the institutions’ decision to align themselves with other colleges and universities of similar size, educational philosophies, and high academic standards.  It highlights the Landmark Conference’s intention to stand out not only in athletics, but also in academics, emphasizing educational achievement and the important role athletics plays as part of the undergraduate experience—and as a defining characteristic of the member institutions.

The competitive season, which begins with practice in late September and culminates with the conference championships in February, is broken up by our annual training trip to Florida over semester break. For the past several years we have traveled to the International Swimming Hall of Fame Pool in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where we will also train for 10 days next winter.
