The Liberal Arts

What Is a Liberal Arts Education, Anyway?

A liberal arts education focuses on breadth of study, exposing you to a variety of subjects. The focus is not on simply learning facts but on learning how to understand those facts. In the words of physicist Albert Einstein, a liberal arts education is “the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks.”

At Susquehanna, you’ll reap all the benefits of a liberal arts education: the ability to think critically, express yourself clearly and make enlightened connections across disciplines. Susquehanna provides students with big opportunities. Many students double major—sometimes creating combinations as unique as religion and economics, or chemistry and philosophy. In scholarly endeavors, our students work closely, often one-on-one, with their professors. Because we admit only undergraduates, you’ll also be guaranteed greater access to your professors.

With an eye toward the future, our faculty recently produced a new Central Curriculum that has helped to ensure that the education we offer remains relevant and provocative. In other words, it will fulfill the goal of producing graduates who acquire knowledge that is at once stimulating and useful in the real world.

For example, through Susquehanna’s GO Program, you will have the chance to grow both academically and personally by experiencing a different culture. Students choose from dozens of approved semester-length programs, including London and Macau, as well as shorter experiences, such as a two-week study tour of Australia or service-learning trip to Central America or the Philippines.

We encourage students to dive into the liberal arts. Doctors need to communicate effectively. Scientists benefit from knowing history. Writers require excellent research skills. At Susquehanna, you won’t just read great speeches; you’ll write and deliver them. You won’t just study art; you’ll create it. You won’t just read about scientific inquiry; you’ll engage in laboratory research.

A Susquehanna liberal arts education will provide you with an adaptable set of skills that will have you well prepared for the ever-changing future.
