Relationships that Define Lives

Erica: To say that Susquehanna University changed my life would be the understatement of the century. For the last ten years, Susquehanna has been an integral part of each and every day.

I began my career here as an undergraduate in 1996. Over the course of the next four years, not only did I receive an amazing education, I also formed the relationships that have defined my life. I met my husband, Nick, at 312 University Avenue; we were married in Seibert Hall by Chaplain Radecke. We just recently planted a tree on campus to celebrate our fifth anniversary. My best friends were there when we met, stood with us at our wedding and continue to be an important part of our lives. And as if we weren’t already blessed, both of our younger sisters have been here with us for the last four years.

After graduation, I began working for the Office of Residence Life as a part-time area coordinator, a position that provided housing on campus for Nick, our two cats and me. Over the last six years as my position within residence life grew, we had the opportunity to see what life was like in three different apartments on campus. As a student, I only lived in Seibert Hall, but as an administrator, I’ve had the chance to live in West Hall, Aikens Hall and the Scholars House!

In living on campus, I have been fortunate enough to see students in their “outside the classroom” lives. It’s generally humorous, sometimes sad, but always extremely fulfilling. Watching the personal growth of our students is a constant reaffirmation of the power of SU. Being a part of this community is so much more than a collegial affiliation, it’s much more like being a part of a very large family.

Nick: I first heard of Susquehanna from my aunt, Peggy Lobsitz ’79 Mullaney. I took one step onto campus and knew that I was in the right place. In fact, I never even considered another college – it is good I got accepted.

Susquehanna has been so much to me over the years, first as a student, and now as a staff member in the Office of Admissions, that this place is literally 220 acres of memories. There is not a spot on campus that doesn’t hold importance to me. This campus is my home, and a home to much of my family. In a few short weeks I will sit in the field house surrounded by my family and watch my sister and my sister-in-law walk across the stage to receive diplomas. SU is for me and my family a place that truly changes lives.

Science Arcitects Named

Planning continues for a new science building, the leading priority of the Changing Lives, Building Futures campaign. The firms STV (Douglassville, Pa., office) and Perkins+Will (New York City office) have been named architects for the planned 81,000-square-foot building. The academic facility, to house Susquehanna’s “wet sciences,” will be constructed on the site of North Hall parking lot.

Claim to Fame Challenge Winners Announced

The Landmark Conference Logo

Congratulations to student Jamie Feretic ’07, and alumna Cheryl Fell ’00, the winners of Susquehanna’s first “Claim to Fame Challenge”! Each will have a sandwich named in their honor at Benny’s Bistro, formerly known as Encore Café.

Alumni graduating within the last 10 years and current students were challenged to make a gift to the Susquehanna University Fund between July 1, 2006, and March 15, 2007.

Each contribution gave the donor a chance to win naming rights to a sandwich.

Alumni often wonder, “What can my $10 do?” The contest translated contributions into something tangible, showing alumni that every gift does make a difference. It was also a light-hearted way to bring young alumni and students together in demonstrating their commitment to Susquehanna and the impact their Susquehanna experiences have had on their lives.

New Staffers Support Advancement

Over the last 12 months, Susquehanna has brought several new members onto the University Relations team. “We’re delighted that we’ve been able to attract talented, highly-skilled individuals to advance our relationship-building work with alumni, parents and friends of the university,” said Ron Cohen, vice president for university relations. “It’s a bonus that several of our new colleagues also bring connections to Susquehanna.”

Pictured are, left to right, standing: Malcolm Derk ’05, Assistant Director, Susquehanna University Fund; Meagan LeBreton ’02 Dresser, Advancement Researcher; Doug Seaberg, Assistant Vice President for Gift Planning; and Bryan Rynearson ’82, Assistant Director of Gift Planning; sitting: Carolyn Coldren, Assistant Director of Gift Planning; Kimberly Andretta, Assistant Director of Gift Planning; Angela Hoot ’00, Assistant Director, Susquehanna University Fund; and Rebecca Bramer ’92 Deitrick P’11, Director of Alumni Relations.

“Our efforts to keep alumni and parents involved with Susquehanna in ways that are attractive to them and beneficial to current students are at the center of what we do every day. The new members of our team have begun making connections in the field and on campus that will help to more firmly establish social and professional networks that are valued by all Susquehanna graduates,” Cohen said.

Of note:
• Doug Seaberg is the spouse of Jane Daly Seaberg, Susquehanna’s director of public relations from 1986-1989 and presently interim director of communications.
• Bryan Rynearson is perhaps better known among Susquehannans as “Ryno,” a name to which he still answers.
• Becky Deitrick’s parents – Jim Bramer ’64 and Barbara Miles Skipper ’89 – are also alumni and her step-daughter, Andrea Deitrick, is an incoming member of the Class of 2011. Be sure to check out Becky’s introductory note.
• Meagan Dresser is the spouse of Evan Dresser ’02.
• Absent from the photo but no stranger to the university, another new university relations staffer is Chris Praul ’93, director of advancement services.
