Letters to the Editor
As I perused my latest S.U. newsletter {Susquehanna Today Summer, 2002}, I came upon a "showcased" article dealing with a new addition to the S.U. Alumni Association. The group was called the L.G.B.T. or Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender S.U. alumni association. In the article, this new diversity group solicited support from the Susquehanna Community and advertised their scheduled slate of activities for this fall's Homecoming weekend. I couldn't help thinking how the "founding fathers" of this church affiliated university must be "rolling over in their graves" right now! I guess S.U. wants to join the Harvards, Princetons, Michigans, & Stanfords around the country, as one of the truly "politically correct" institutions of higher learning.
Earlier in the summer newsletter under the Forum column, were two conflicting opinions about the naming of the new S.U. sports complex. As a former "Garrett footballer" {1961-65} I read the letters intently. It wasn't difficult to catch the irony as I read a particular statement from former S.U. faculty member, Joseph Carter. While expressing his disapproval concerning the attachment of Coach Garrett's name to the new sport complex, Mr. Carter said: "To name the facility for someone who did not demonstrate the kind of excellence that the university strives to instill in it's graduates is a slap in the face of all those coaches who have dutifully and unspectacularly done so."
Well, all I can say to the "powers that be" at my oId alma mater is this --- What kind of a slap in the face have you just given to who knows how many loyal alumni by your obvious approval and visible support of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender association? Is this your idea of "the kind of excellence S. U. strives to instill in its undergraduates" as Mr Carter stated in his aforementioned letter?
I am not only withdrawing any future support {including finances and student referrals} but I am requesting that you immediately discontinue any mailings or phone calls to my residence.
Thank-you.
