Harry Eugene Steffen Sr. '25, June 29, 2002, Lewisberry, Pa. He was retired from Bethlehem Steel in Steelton as an engineer in the metallurgical department. He also taught at Selinsgrove and Steelton high schools and had been principal at Lower Mahanoy Township High School in Dalmatia. He is survived by his grandson, Matthew Plessinger '95.

Isabelle Moritz '30 Kaye, May 7, 2002, Cinnaminson, N.J. She taught at Plains Township High School and later at New Jersey elementary schools.

Ruth Bergstresser '34 Koch, August 30, 2002, Hazleton, Pa. She was retired from the English department of the Hazleton Area School District.

David Edgar "Ted" Hutchison '34, Dec. 11, 2002, Walkerton, Ind. He worked as a Firestone tire salesman for 30 years. He is survived by his brother, Horace Hutchison '36, son David Hutchison '61, grandson Lawrence Hutchison '78 and great-grandson Justin Hutchison '06.

Eleanor Brown '34 Miller, Oct. 23, 2002, Westminster, Pa. She taught business education at New Oxford High School from 1934 to 1936 and at Littlestown High School from 1936 until her marriage in 1943. She later returned to teaching business administration and served as business department chairperson at Franklin Senior High School in Reisterstown, Md.

Anna Mease '36 Wagner, Nov. 20, 2002, Presque Isle Bay, Pa. She retired as a mathematics teacher for the Mifflin County School District in Lewistown.

David A. Shellenberger '37, Nov. 11, 2002, Mifflintown, Pa. He was a teacher in the Fayette and East Juniata school systems for 37 years. He taught English grammar, music and history.

John W. Roberts '38, May 6, 2002, Bethlehem, Pa. He worked at Bethlehem Steel Corp. for 42 years, retiring in 1978.

Kent Worthington '38, Sept. 9, 2002, Osterville, Mass. He served in the Navy during World War II in the North Atlantic, where he saw military action. After the war, began a career in teaching. He was a professor for a number of years for various universities and colleges. After retiring from teaching, he pursued a career with People's Drug Stores in Washington, D.C.

Harriet Mendenhall '41 Stonesifer, August 26, 2002, West Orange, N.J. She is survived by cousins, Jane Hutchison '41 Kaempfer, Horace Hutchison '36 and Edgar Hutchison '34.

Melvin Haas '42, June 1, 2002, Redlands, Calif. He was a physician with the Beaver Medical Clinic from 1953 to 1992. He was also a physician in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Amarillo, Texas, with the rank of captain from 1951 to 1953.

Irma Bauman '42 Wegst, Sept. 23, 2002, Beach Lake, Pa. She was first employed at the Seagram's Distillery, Lawrenceburg, Ind. After a year, she was employed with Deering Miliken, New York City. Before her retirement, she was employed by Katz Bros. Dept. Store. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed her pet cats.

Catherine Byrod '44 Whitman, December 25, 2002. Steelton, Pa. Also a graduate of Penn State University, she retired following a teaching career at Steelton-Highspire High School. She was a member of the Dauphin County Retired Teachers Association and the Pennsylvania State School Employees Association and a member, former church secretary, and former Sunday school teacher at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Ruth G. Botdorf '45, July 22, 2002, State College, Pa. She was a professor of chemistry, having retired from the Berks campus of the Pennsylvania State University; and having also taught at the University's DuBois campus, the former Ogontz campus and the McKeesport campus.

Marian Willard '45 Dowlin, July 5, 2002, Honey Brook, Pa.

Dorothy Sternat '46 Thomas, July 30, 2002, Biglerville, Pa. She taught music in the Upper Adams and Fairfield school districts for many years. She also was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where she was the church organist for more than 25 years. She is survived by her daughter, Gayle Thomas '74 Green.

William B. Rothenberg '47, May 9, 2002, Emmaus, Pa. He taught music and social studies for Emmaus Junior High School, where he organized the first marching band. He directed Emmaus High School marching band before retiring from the East Penn School District in 1979. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe and playing in the band, and was a past commander of American Legion Post 191, Emmaus.

Gayle Clark '47 Weigle, Oct. 29, 2002, Millerstown, Pa. After working for the former Smith-Kline and French, Philadelphia, she taught in Greenwood School District, Millerstown, and was an office manager at Greenwood Medical Center, the medical office of her first husband, Dr. Ross J. Johns, who died Oct. 29, 1979.

Robert A. Fisher '48, Oct. 31, 2002, Lower Paxton Township, Pa. He graduated from Hahnemann Medical College in 1952 and was a World War II Army Veteran. He worked in psychiatry in the Harrisburg Area until his retirement. He was on staff at Polyclinic Hospital; was an advisor at Dickinson College; was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Penbrook; Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society; American Psychiatric Society; Pennsylvania Medical Society and the American Medical Association.

Marlin O. Bobb '50, August 9, 2002, Herndon, Pa. He served in the U.S. Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Boxer as a signal man during World War II. He was owner and operator of the former Bailey's Breeze-In. He was previously employed with Rich Oil Company and as a rural route carrier for the U.S. Postal Services. He and his wife were also the owners and operators of Marlin O. Bobb Plumbing, Heating and Hardware Store from 1963 to 1987. He was the mayor of the borough of Herndon.

Martin A. Eagan '51, Sept. 25, 2002, Spring Lake Heights, N.J. He was the marketing director of Marine Trading International, South Toms River, N.J. until his recent retirement last year. He was an Army veteran, serving stateside following the end of World War II.

Robert O. Bogdanffy '52, July 8, 2002, Vernon, N.J. He worked for State Farm Insurance in several of their offices in North Jersey before retiring.

Frank Smith '55, Oct. 17, 2002, Mechanicsburg, Pa. He was a merchandise manager for Sears in Allentown. He is survived by his son, D. Zachary Smith '81. A memorial fund is being established at Susquehanna University in Frank Smith's memory. Alice Ann Patterson '58 Jacobs, August 20, 2002, New York City, N.Y. Following graduation from Susquehanna, she taught music in the Mahwah, New Jersey, public schools. She earned a master's degree in 1961 from Columbia University and completed coursework toward a Ph.D. in music education from 1965 to 1969 at New York University. From 1961 to 1969, she taught music in the Sachem Central Schools, Lake Ronkonkoma, Long Island. She married William Leidel in 1969 and together they had a son, Jonathan. She honed her skills as a parent, music educator and community leader while living in Syosset, N.Y. Following the death of her husband in 1990, Alice Ann moved to New York City. On February 14, 1999, she married retired ophthalmologist, Dr. Clyde H. Jacobs H'00 from Northumberland, Pa., a longtime friend of Susquehanna University. She served as president of the Educational Foundation of the American Association of University Women from 1993 to 1997.

Eleanor Ambromovage '62 Castagna, July 10, 2002, Philadelphia, Pa.

Norman Lauer '62, August 19, 2002, Selinsgrove, Pa. He was a retired certified public accountant and partner at Clark, Lauer and Schaeffer. He is survived by two daughters, Wendy Lauer '80 Mull and Suzanne Lauer '83, and a granddaughter, Ellen Mull '04.

Cedric W. Tilberg H'63, May 21, 2002, Gettysburg, Pa. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, where he served as a teacher and as chairman for several years of the congregation's Historical and Archival Committee. Following his ordination in 1943, he served 15 years as a parish pastor in Washington, D.C., Glenside, and Altoona. He became director of social missions for the Central Pennsylvania Synod, United Lutheran Church in America, in 1958.

Benjamin H. Lovell '65, May 18, 2002, Martha's Vineyard, Mass. After his graduation from Naval Officers' School in Newport, he served in Vietnam on the USS Tulare, AKA112, from 1966 to 1968. After the Navy in 1970, he spent many years in Montana and other western states doing various jobs. Being a great admirer of the natural world, he volunteered for the Raptor Education Foundation, taking birds of prey into the classrooms to educate children about the ways of raptors.

Jack R. Campbell '67, Nov. 5, 2002, Weisbaden Germany. He taught conversational American English in Weisbaden, was a former German teacher in Manheim Township and Ephrata high schools, and was certified to teach Scottish dancing in Edinboro, Scotland. He performed with Actors' Company productions in Lancaster during the 1960s and 1970s and also helped launch Actor's Company Theatre for Students.

John S. Hale '68, July 2, 2002, Lititz, Pa.

Frank L. Altieri '71, Nov. 27, 2001, Houston, Texas. He was a partner with Altieri & Wise for 16 years.

Albert P. Stauderman H'73, Nov. 3, 2002, Germantown, Pa. During his more than 60 years as a clergyman, Stauderman combined church ministry with journalism to counsel believers, guide the church, and illuminate biblical texts. He was a longtime editor of The Lutheran, a magazine published by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and also served as managing editor of the denomination's Muhlenberg Press.

Michael John Buterbaugh '76, Sept. 2, 2002, Charlotte, N.C. He was a former coach with the West Mecklenburg Athletic Association. He was a regional claims supervisor for Gallagher-Bassett Services Inc. for more than 20 years.

Christopher Rooke '82, Dec. 21, 2002, Harding, N.J., following a two-and-a-half-year battle with brain cancer. He had been a manager with AT&T in Parsippany, N.J., prior to retiring in 1995 to become a stay-at-home dad following the birth of his son, Davis. He was a member of the Classic Car Club of America and co-editor, with his wife, Cindy, of the CCCA Metropolitan Magazine. He was also a trustee at the Harding Township Historical Society and an active volunteer with the New Vernon Volunteer Fire Department.

Joseph Kusakavitch '91, June 24, 2002, Swoyersville, Pa. He was a co-owner of Kus Tire Company in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

Former Coach John Barr, July 1, 2002, at Geisinger Medical Center following hip replacement surgery. He coached men's basketball and golf at Susquehanna from 1957 to 1969 and compiled a record of 100-151 as basketball coach. In 1962-63, Barr led the Crusaders to a then school-record 20 victories, a total that is still the third-highest in program history. Barr was a 1941 graduate of Penn State, where he earned All-America honors and became the first player in Nittany Lion history to surpass 500 career points. He lived in Shamokin, Pa., at the time of his death.

Professor Emeritus of Education Charles J. Igoe, Sept. 23, 2002. He was a member of the Susquehanna University faculty for 30 years, having joined the university in 1964.

Retired Associate Professor of Music Frances Alterman Nimaroff, Jan. 1, 2003, White Plains, N.Y. She earned the B.M. from the Eastman School of Music and the M.A. in Music Education from Columbia University Teachers College. She also studied at the Juilliard School of Music. She joined the Susquehanna faculty as an instructor in voice in the Conservatory of Music in 1956 and retired in the early 1970s. She was also certified as a physical therapist and had served with the U.S. Army in that capacity in Italy, Africa and the United States from 1936 to 1956.
