Ernest W. Huston ’34 resides with his wife in assisted living at Luthercare in Lititz, Pa., where he cares for his wife who is afflicted with Parkinson’s Disease. He retired from the ministry at age 65 in 1977. Since then he has supply preached in many churches in Lancaster, York and Lebanon Counties in Pennsylvania. He also served as interim pastor for six congregations in Lancaster County while they sought new pastors. When the new pastor arrived at Grace Lutheran Church, Lancaster, he asked Pastor Huston to stay on with him and help care for approximately eighty shut-ins. There he spent the next sixteen years and finally retired from there at age 90 at the end of March 2002. Simultaneously, he served as interim pastor at Zion Lutheran Church, East Petersburg, Pa., where he and his wife are members. This lasted seventeen months.

Francis Hubler ’35 Nuernberg and her husband, Bill, live at Friendship Village in Pittsburgh, Pa. There are 350 folks living there ranging in age from about high 60s to 100, they’re definitely in the “older group.” She is forgetful of people’s names occasionally, and she wears hearing aids, but otherwise is in good health. They live in a carriage house (fully-equipped, big rooms, etc., double garage) and they are across the street from the main entrance. They have buses to take them to everything going on in the city, and a great staff! Over the years they did a lot of traveling – Europe, Orient, Australia, and United States, but now they are happy to stay put. They have two great-grandsons, Mark, age 3, and Kevin, age 1. They are the sons of their granddaughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Don Bruey, who live in Ann Arbor, Mich. Their daughter, Nancy, and her husband, Roger, live in the Lansing area. Their other granddaughter, Laurie Smith, teaches in Brighton, Mich. Their son, Bill, is partner in a Philadelphia law firm but in charge of their Miami office.

Philip Templin ’42 and his wife, Betty, live in Meadville, Pa. He was awarded a plaque in 1945 by the United States War Department, Manhattan District, in appreciation of his “participation in the work essential to the production of the atomic bomb, thereby contributing to the successful conclusion of World War II.” In 1942, the first year of the U.S. involvement in World War II, Philip began work as a chemist developing heavy water at one of DuPont’s experimental labs in Morgantown, W.Va. The heavy water created there was then shipped to other plants where uranium was enriched for use in atomic weapons. After the war ended, he went to work in research and development for the Gulf Oil Company in Harmarville, north of Pittsburgh. He worked for Gulf from 1945 until he retired in 1982.

Seven young women, graduates from the conservatory of music at Susquehanna, sat down on graduation day, June 1944, to discuss starting a round robin letter to keep in touch. We did just that. Recently, Ethel Wilson ’44 Kerschner received the “robin,” which has been going ‘round for 59 years. In those years, robin was started again only three times. They are looking forward to next Alumni Day, June 2004, so they can meet for their 60th reunion. They are Jean Renfer ’44 Kolb, Jane Stitt ’44, Norma Frank ’44 Gross, Lois Kramer ’44 Pritz, Helen Hocker ’44 Schueler, Phyllis Wolfe ’44 Englert, Janet Hoke ’44 Reiff and Ethel.
