All American Bartosic Beaks Records All Around

Senior split end Mark Bartosic ’04 wrapped up a record-setting career on the Crusader football team by earning consensus All-American honors following the 2003 season.

Bartosic was a first-team selection by both American Football Coaches Association and D3hoops.com, and was a second-team choice by Don Hansen's Football Gazette, the Associated Press and the Division III Sports Information Directors. He was also a finalist for the prestigious Gagliardi Trophy, which is presented to the outstanding Division III football player.

An information systems major from Sunbury, Pa., Bartosic is a four-time first-team All-Middle Atlantic Conference selection who caught 78 passes for 1,313 yards and 13 touchdowns to lead the MAC in all three categories for the second straight season.

He became the first player in NCAA history at any level with four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons on November 1 against Albright and is tied for second in Division III history with a catch in all 40 games of his career.

Bartosic ended his Crusader career with 275 catches for 4,733 yards and 55 touchdowns to rank second in Division III history in yards, tied for second in touchdowns and sixth in receptions. He also ranks fourth in all divisions in yards and tied for third in touchdown catches and is the MAC career leader in all three categories.

He was also selected as one of 42 NCAA Division III seniors to participate in the Aztec Bowl, which is sponsored by the AFCA and pits a Division III all-star team against the Mexican National Team. An injury forced him to withdraw from the contest prior to the game.

SU Cross-Country Gains Second All American

Senior Ryan Gleason ’04 became Susquehanna's second All-American in cross country when he finished 19th overall at the NCAA Division III championships on November 22 at Hanover (Indiana) College with a time of 25:36.9.

By finishing in the top 35, Gleason joined Greg Pealer ’85 (11th in 1983) as the only All-Americans in program history.

Gleason trimmed 19 seconds off his second-place time at the NCAA Mideast Regionals time as he finished 1:02 behind race-winner junior Josh Moen of Wartburg University. In last year’s NCAA meet in Northfield, Minnesota, Gleason finished 71st with a time of 26:05.2 after coming in 85th at the 2001 championship meet at Augustana, Illinois.

Gleason, a political science major from Johnstown, Pa., is a four-time first-team All-Middle Atlantic Conference honoree after finishing seventh as a freshman, fifth as a sophomore, fourth as a junior and third this season. He was coached by Marty Owens this year after running for three years under Craig Penney.

Women’s Soccer Teammates Earn Mid-Atlantic Kudos

Juniors Lindsay Nevins ’05 and Jess Paulshock ’05 have been named to the 2003 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Adidas Division III All Mid -Atlantic Women’s Soccer Team, as voted upon by the region’s head coaches.

Nevins, a forward, and Paulshock, a midfielder, were third-team selections to become the second and third players in program history to earn All-Region honors, joining Kim Anderson '02 who was a third-team selection in 2000.

They helped the Crusaders set school single-season records for victories with 11 and goals with 52 and helped Susquehanna earn its second straight berth in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs under fifth-year head coach Jim Findlay.

Nevins, a public relations major from Basking Ridge, N.J., has been named first-team All-Commonwealth Conference in each of the last two seasons and was a second-team pick as a freshman. She finished the season ranked fifth in the conference with nine goals and sixth with 22 points, both career highs. In 52 career games, Nevins is tied for second in school history with 23 goals and fourth with 53 points.

A writing major from Pottsville, Pa., Paulshock earned first-team All-Conference honors for the first time after setting school single-season records with 15 goals and 34 points to lead the Commonwealth Conference in both categories.

Paulshock also set a school record with three hat tricks on the season and tied for the league lead with four game-winning goals. She is tied for second with Nevins on the career goals list with 23, and has 13 assists for 59 points for the second-highest total in school history behind the 102 tallied by Anderson from 1998-2001.

Matt Karchner Appointed Interim Baseball Coach

Former major league relief pitcher Matt Karchner has been appointed interim baseball coach for the 2004 season at Susquehanna. Karchner replaces Tim Briggs, who resigned recently after compiling a 56-92-1 record in five seasons with the Crusaders.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have someone with Matt’s background join our staff. He brings a positive attitude and a unique knowledge of the game to the position,” said Athletic Director Pam Samuelson. “We also appreciate the efforts of assistant coach Denny Bowers, who played a vital role in helping to maintain continuity during the transition period.”

“I am excited about the opportunity to begin a new phase of my baseball career here at Susquehanna,” said Karchner. “My goal is to maximize the potential of this team and contend for a spot in the conference playoffs.”

Karchner, 36, pitched six seasons in the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs from 1995 to 2000, compiling a record of 21-13 with 27 saves and a 4.21 earned run average in 223 relief appearances.

His best season came with the White Sox in 1997, when he went 3-1 with 15 saves and a 2.91 earned run average in 52 games. Karchner’s final major league appearance came on June 14, 2000 as a member of the Cubs.

A native of Berwick, Karchner is a 1989 graduate of Bloomsburg University where he was a three-time first-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selection. A third baseman and pitcher for the Huskies who still holds the school career records for home runs with 37 and runs batted in with 165, Karchner was inducted into the BU Athletic Hall of Fame in October, 2003.

Karchner was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 8th round of the 1989 amateur draft, and played in the Royals’ farm system through the 1993 season. In 1994, Karchner joined the White Sox organization and made his major league debut on July 18, 1995 against the New York Yankees.
