Swim Alumni Make Splash in Return to Campus

Coach Schweikert

Susquehanna University Swimming Coach G. Edward “Ged” Schweikert, the only coach the program has known in its 27-year intercollegiate history, welcomed approximately 200 attendees to the swim reunion during Homecoming Reunion Weekend 2007. Schweikert, associate professor emeritus of psychology, retired from teaching in 2006 after 36 years, but plans to continue as swimming coach for five more years. “I’m not going to try to outlast Joe Paterno,” Schweikert jokes. “But I’ll coach until I’m 70 — my 37th or 38th year.”

During Homecoming Reunion Weekend 2007, alumni swimmers flooded back to campus to reconnect with each other and G. Edward “Ged” Schweikert, the only coach in the 27-year intercollegiate history of the program.

John Stahl ’81, a member of the men’s swim team in its inaugural season in 1980, was one of an estimated 45 alumni returning for the competitive meet and reception that followed. “I wanted to come back to see my old — well, not that old yet — friends, see Coach and see if I could make it to the other end of the pool and back without embarrassing myself,” Stahl says. “All were outstanding experiences,” he adds.

Schweikert, named conference Coach of the Year in 2000, 2005 and 2007, was incredibly pleased with the success of the event. The reunion drew approximately 200 people, including alumni and their families, as well as current students. The family atmosphere several alumni cited in their recollections of the program was evident during the meet, in which alumni and current student-athletes energetically encouraged one another throughout the competition.

Also attending was Judith Rile ’78, one of the students who first approached Schweikert about the formation of the program, which started as a club sport in 1978. “It is always great to come back to campus but the swim team reunion was special. It was neat to see how something has grown and flourished over the years,” Rile says.
