Hurricane Relief Program Expands, Receives National Recognition

Susquehanna University was named the bronze award winner in the 2006 National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Excellence Award in the category of Careers, Academic Support, Service Learning and Community Service. Presented by the pre-eminent national organization of student affairs administrators in higher education, the designation identifies SU's hurricane relief program as one of the top three in college student affairs.

In addition, the university expanded its Gulf Coast efforts to include a service learning component. A seven-week, two-credit, interdisciplinary class called Disaster Impacts in Society was added to the university's course offerings as an option for students to learn about the complex impact that disasters have on the environment and society. The effect Hurricane Katrina had on New Orleans is the focal point of the class. The addition of this class has transformed the hurricane relief trips into true service-learning endeavors, providing student volunteers with a richer and more meaningful experience.

According to Eric Lassahn, director of residence life and volunteer programs, the class not only filled to capacity, it had a waiting list. The same has been true of the service trips. “Participation has been outstanding and enthusiasm has been at a fever pitch. Students learn so much on the trips, and they almost always report experiencing profound personal change,” Lassahn says.

Since January 2006, the university has sent six teams of students, faculty and staff to the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast, the most recent of which traveled to Louisiana May 14 to 21. Additional trips are planned for the next academic year.

Student-Athlete Delivers New Conference Logo

The Landmark Conference Logo
The winning conference design by Tim Storck '08

Susquehanna University is already making its mark in the Landmark Conference, the new eight-team Division III athletics conference of which Susquehanna is a charter member. A logo designed and submitted by graphic design major and men’s lacrosse player Tim Storck ’08, of Cockeysville, Md., was selected unanimously by the conference’s eight presidents as the winner of an on-campus contest among member schools to create a logo.

For his efforts, Storck was awarded $1,000 in addition to the $250 he received for winning the on-campus contest. His design was publicly unveiled at the Susquehanna Sports Hall of Fame dinner in February.

The Landmark Conference begins its inaugural year of competition in the 2007-2008 academic year. Members include Susquehanna, Catholic University of America, Drew University, Goucher College, Juniata College, Moravian College, United States Merchant Marine Academy and the University of Scranton.

All the World's a Campus

Did you know that 35 percent of Susquehanna students study abroad during their four years at the university? They study business in London, Spanish in Argentina, and environmental science in Australia. They go to Celtic dances in Edinburgh and eat gelato in Rome. During the fall 2006 semester alone, SU students studied in 11 countries. The most popular destinations are Australia, England, and Spain, although increasingly students are choosing untraditional locations like Japan, Senegal, Ecuador, and Greece.

I spent my fall 2006 semester studying environmental science in tropical northeast Australia. For me, Australia was my classroom. I snorkeled, explored rainforests, and camped with Aborigines. During an independent research project I studied fairy penguins in the south of the continent. Throughout my adventures, I met wonderful people and experienced the environment of Australia as I never could have otherwise. My experiences were incredible, so I decided to build a Web site to share them. I invite you to join me on my explorations by clicking here.
