Alfey Stamets ’35 is still living in suburban Harrisburg, Pa. At 91, she’s slowed down considerably, but she still enjoys reading and especially likes to “putter” in her flower garden. This year she’s very proud of the results. She planted three dozen pink geraniums and 101 (two flats) of pink and purple
petunias. Despite an “achin’ back,” Alfey enjoyed a terrific feeling of satisfaction.
Alfey spent 35 years teaching high school English in the Central Dauphin Schools, did a great deal of church-related work, especially with stewardship and youth, and enjoyed other organizational work. But no more! It seems there comes a time for a more relaxed and quieter way of life.
Much has happened to each of us since we left SU in 1935. As far as we know, there are only ten of us still left. To those of you who haven’t responded to Bob Clark’s or Alfey’s notes, please let us hear from you.

Ferne Lauver Zeigler, Emagean Pensyl Whitmoyer and Ruth Eleanor McCorkill enjoyed their 61st Reunion during Alumni Weekend, June 5. They had a personal tour of the recently renovated university archives in the lower level of the library. It was very impressive and brought back memories of their years on campus.
Thanks to a friend, Ruth viewed through a telescope on June 8 to see Venus pass in front of the sun. It looked like a small black dot on the lower right edge of the sun at 7:00 a.m. This was a memorable experience to see a rare event that had not occurred since 1882.
Ruth wishes more of her classmates lived closer to SU and were able to return for alumni events, concerts, candlelight services and theatrical programs. Please take time to write to Ruth about yourself and your family. Your friends are interested and care about you. Ruth’s phone number is 570-473-7457.

A musical tribute to the Reverend Herman Stuempfle Jr. ’45 was held in the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, Pa., in April of 2004. The program featured 12 hymns written by Rev. Stuempfle. Although he didn’t begin writing hymns until he was in his 60s, he has composed nearly 600, of which more than 200 have been published.
Robert W. Surplus ’45 was honored by the Kentucky Music Educators Association at the annual conference in February 2004, when he was the recipient of the Citation for Service Award. Bob had previously received the Dis-tinguished Service Award in 1983. In addition to being listed in Who’s Who in America, Bob’s profile now appears in Who’s Who in the World.
Bob and his wife, Jean, continue to travel. Last summer they visited Eastern Europe and traveled by river boat from Budapest to the Black Sea. A highlight of their trip included sitting in the royal box for a performance of Don Giovanni at the same opera house in Prague where Mozart conducted its first performance. Other highlights included enjoying wonderful Gypsy music in restaurants in Budapest, Kalosca, Belgrade and Bucharest, and lunching with families in Slovakia, Hungary and Bulgaria. In March 2004, they traveled to Malta where they visited the oldest standing monuments in the world, which pre-date the pyramids by over a thousand years. Here, again, they enjoyed lunch with a local family and visited many ancient fortifications, museums and churches, including the cathedral built by the Knights of Saint John in Valetta, Malta’s capital.
