Background
The Academic Advancement Program (AAP) is based in Susquehanna University Tutorial Services. Although no student is accepted to Susquehanna unless it is felt that s/he can be successful, some students show, through their high school records and SAT scores, that they would be more likely to succeed with the help of academic support services. Admissions officers, therefore, may recommend participation in the Academic Advancement Program or, in some cases, may offer enrollment in AAP as a condition of acceptance.
AAP Services
Academic Mentoring: AAP provides academic mentors who maintain contact
with AAP students, especially throughout the first year. Mentors work closely
with
students regarding issues that affect academic work. Referrals
are made
as necessary
to other campus services.
Study Skills/Reading: AAP provides coursework and individualized instruction
in study skills, college-level reading skills, and stress management, offering
ways to help students manage their time and make a successful transition from
high school to college.
Tutoring: Professional staff and peer tutors are available to work with
students in writing, mathematics, and any of the courses offered by the Modern
Languages department.
During the first year, the AAP student:
-
Participates in AAP orientation, which will introduce program benefits, staff, and other students involved with the program.
-
Meets weekly with an AAP mentor for the first seven weeks of fall semester and as needed throughout the rest of the year.
-
Fulfills study skills component and may also be eligible for the following courses: College Writing, College Math Prep, PreCalculus, and/or Approaching College Texts.
-
Attends tutoring sessions in subjects relevant to her/his course of study.
In subsequent years:
Grades are reviewed at mid-term and the end of each semester. AAP staff will work with the student to determine the best course of action to help the student maintain a GPA of 2.25 or higher. The student agrees to fully participate in this process.
