Search Engine
If you don't know a specific web address and aren't following a link from a page, the only way to get around on the Internet is with a search engine. There are many search engines on the web. They range from generic ones that attempt to keep an index of as many Web pages as possible and there are those that limit their indexes to specific topics. Each one has a different indexing algorithm, so no two search engines will produce the same results. If you are researching a topic, you will probably want to try several search engines. Each one has specific syntax to help narrow down the search results, so take the time to check the help files and advanced search options.
At Susquehanna, we provide our own search engine to help you find those hard to find pages. You can usually find the same information in one of the big search engines, but if you're already on the Susquehanna Web site, then why not use our search engine?
Susquehanna uses a software package, called Ultraseek, provided by Verity, to index the pages on our Web site. Ultraseek allows you to perform basic or advanced searches. Advanced searches allow you to narrow your criteria to provide you with better search results. Our search engine is constantly re-indexing to reflect the constant changes to our Web site. The latest information on our Web site is never far away when using our search engine.
If you maintain a Web page at Susquehanna, Ultraseek is capable of being configured to search your pages without including the entire Web site. For an example of this capability, see the "Search I.T." box on this Web page. If you would like to add this capability to your department, program or organization Web site, please contact the Webmaster for more information.
